Background

Launched at the United Nations in 2008, Business Call to Action (BCtA) aims to accelerate progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by challenging companies to develop and grow inclusive business models that engage people at the base of the economic pyramid (BoP) as consumers, producers, suppliers, distributors of goods and services and employees. Over 250 companies, ranging from multinationals to small and medium social enterprises, and working in 72 countries, have responded to this call to action by committing to improve the lives and livelihoods of millions in developing countries through access to markets, financial services, affordable healthcare, water and sanitation, education and other critical services.

BCtA is building the culture and capacity within private sector actors to measure and manage impact on the SDGs. BCtA provides tools, technical assistance and training to its member companies to measure and manage their inclusive business’ impact in alignment with the SDGs. In 2015, BCtA rolled out an in-depth impact measurement programme – the BCtA Impact Management Services (BIMS) – with 21-member companies developing their impact frameworks and collecting data from their stakeholders. Following the BIMS project, BCtA developed an online Impact Lab to provide end to end IMM support to businesses starting with SDG impact framework to data collection and reporting. The Impact Lab is designed to help companies drive business value through impact management through a step by step process. The aim of the Impact Lab is to enable companies to understand, prove, and improve their contributions to the SDGs. In 2019, BCtA launched its first Impact Champions Programme with member companies taking them through a series of workshops designed to build an impact management with an SDGs lens through the Impact Lab. Participating companies also developed and implemented a data collection plan gathering evidence of impact from their stakeholders.

BCtA is seeking to publish a flagship report covering five years of its impact management journey. The purpose of this report is to document the history and inform the next phase of BCtA’s impact management services (from BIMS in 2015 up until the completion of the Impact Champions Programme in 2020).

Duties and Responsibilities

The key duties and responsibilities for this position include:

Organizing and standardizing data collected by companies as part of the BIMS and Impact Champions Programme
Analyzing impact data and generating visuals (graphs and charts) to effectively answer key research questions in the flagship report described above
Supporting BCtA’s impact team in other related tasks such as conducting research, writing brief narratives to elaborate on the data gathered, and developing presentations.

Competencies

Proficient in MS Excel, advanced user of MS Office. Experience with R Studio or STATA is an advantage
Up to date knowledge of the impact management process
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills;
Ability to manage workload with minimum supervision and collaborate with a wide range of colleagues, while meeting deadlines;
Openness to change and ability to receive/integrate feedback; and
Excellent interpersonal skills: being able to listen and collaborate with a wide range of players, working in an international environment, being pro-active and taking initiative and responsibility in one’s work.

Required Skills and Experience

Academic Qualifications/Education:

Education in the field of Economics, Statistics, International Development or other related fields.

Experience:

Experience and good understanding of databases, especially data cleaning, merging datasets and data visualization
Excellent command on Microsoft office programmes (Excel, Word, Power Point); and
Strong interest in economic development and the role of the private sector in driving poverty reduction.

Eligibility

Applicants to the UNDP internship programme must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:

Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent);
Have graduated with a university degree (as defined in (a) and (b) above) and, if selected, must start the internship within one-year of graduation.

Stipend

Interns will be given a stipend according to the UNDP Internship Policies, if they are not financially supported by any institution or programme, such as a university, government, foundation or scholarship programme.

The monthly amount of the stipend will be determined for each duty station based on the stipend rates published yearly by the OHR Policy and Compensation Unit. The stipend will be paid on a monthly basis and part-time internship arrangements are prorated accordingly.
