Background

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

The Strategic Partnerships Division (SPD) is responsible for proactively driving the positioning of UN Women so that the size, sources and predictability of its resources help the organization achieve its strategic goals. A service centre to UN Women HQ Divisions and Field Offices, SPD is organized into functional clusters, comprising: Resource Mobilization Section (including Liaison Offices), Communications and Advocacy, and Multi-Stakeholder Partnership Engagement. Given the scope and inter-relationships of SPD’s functional responsibilities, the work of SPD is highly synergistic, involving constant and direct interaction and information-sharing among team members, to provide high quality advice, services and support to UN Women.

Within the Strategic Partnerships Division, the Resource Mobilization Section:

•           maintains and enhances donor relations, to strengthen implementation of the UN Women Resource Mobilization Strategy;

•           supports compliance with obligations to donors and other partners, enhancing general institutional accountability; and

•           helps to emphasize the value of funding partnerships and donor contributions.

Under the direct supervision and guidance of the Partnerships Specialist, the intern will assist the Resource Mobilization’s Public Partnerships Team. A work plan with achievements for the duration of the Internship and learning opportunities will be agreed upon. This internship will have an initial period of three months, with possible extension for an additional three months.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide support to Major Partner Focal Points on the management of their portfolios and contribute to the overall implementation of the Resource Mobilization Strategy, including in the organization of high-level consultations with donors, round tables and bilateral meetings.
  • Support in research and analysis in relation to major and emerging donors, and drafting of documents including briefing notes, background notes, notetaking/notes for the record, and preparation of official correspondence to strengthen strategic engagement.
  • Assist in knowledge extraction, analysis and documentation of results/lessons learned, ensuring that knowledge-sharing and content management are in line with guidelines and performed using corporate tools.
  • Support the facilitation of monitoring earmarked contributions through the review and update of data on earmarked contributions by key donors to UN Women programming, to ensure consistency and accuracy of records.
  • Support the team in uploading documents on the UN Women intranet, preparing inputs and relevant briefing materials, updating the database of government counterparts in New York and in the field, and outreach to Member States, including drafting correspondence.
  • Support the piloting of the Salesforce Customer Relationship Management (CRM). platform, content population and review, and development of Standard Operating Procedures, among others.
  • Assist in logistical and operational support and provide other assistance as identified during the internship period.

Required Skills and Experience

Education

  • The intern must have studied International Relations, Political Science, Communications or other similar subject at the university level.
  • The intern must either be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher), enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent) or has graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.

Language:

  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral) in English are required; Working knowledge of French and/or Spanish is preferred.

UN Women Internship Policy:
 

  1. Applicants to the United Nations internship programme must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:
  2. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or
    1. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent);
    2. Have graduated with a university degree (as (b) above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within one year of the graduation date.
    3. Be enrolled in a professional traineeship program which is part of a postgraduate degree programme of which the internship may form part
  3. All the expenses connected with the internship will be borne by the intern, sponsoring Government or institution;
  4. UN Women accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness or death incurred during the internship;
  5. The intern is responsible for obtaining necessary visas and arranging travel to and from the duty station where the internship will be performed;
  6. Interns are not eligible to apply for, or be appointed to, any post in UN Women during the period of the internship or for six months immediately following the expiration date of the internship;
  7. The intern must provide proof of enrollment in a health insurance plan, proof of school enrollment, a scanned copy of his/her passport, two letters of recommendation, and the internship application;
  8. Interns are not financially remunerated by UN Women for their work but may receive a stipend under the conditions set forth in the UNWomen Internship policy.
