Background

Background

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security. Placing women’s rights at the center of all its efforts, UN Women leads and coordinates United Nations system efforts to ensure that commitments on gender equality and gender mainstreaming translate into action throughout the world. It provides strong and coherent leadership in support of Member States’ priorities and efforts, building effective partnerships with civil society and other relevant actors.

UN Women -Country Office - Morocco is based in Rabat, Morocco. UN Women Morocco focuses its activities on 3 areas of intervention:

1.           Women Political Participation (WPP) and Gender-Responsive Public Governance;

2.           Women Economic Empowerment (WEE) and Access to Decent and Stable Income;

3.           Ending Violence Against Women and Girls (EVAWG).

Since August 2015, UN Women Multi-country office in Morocco is implementing the programme “Men and Women for Gender Equality” with funding from the Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA) to understand how best to tackle the root causes of gender inequality and discrimination and address them through a bottom-up approach. Phase I of this regional programme which covered Morocco, Egypt, Lebanon and Palestine, demonstrated the need of continuation of effective development approaches to address the root causes of gender equality, the creation of new and innovative approaches, and continued support for social movements that tackle inequalities and unfavourable social and gender norms. It is against the above background that UN Women initiated the second 3-year phase of the “Men and Women for Gender Equality” programme (MWGE Phase II) (2019-2022), which aims to create favorable realities where men and women in the Arab societies will be able to exercise their rights and opportunities equally. The MWGE is achieving that through promoting gender equality and women’s rights in the Arab States region with a distinct focus on the engagement of men and boys in Egypt, Lebanon, Morocco, Palestine, Tunisia and Jordan.

Note:

In July 2010, the United Nations General Assembly created UN Women, the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women. The creation of UN Women came about as part of the UN reform agenda, bringing together resources and mandates for greater impact. It merges and builds on the important work of four previously distinct parts of the UN system (DAW, OSAGI, INSTRAW and UNIFEM), which focused exclusively on gender equality and women's empowerment.
