The United Nations Millennium Campaign was launched in October 2002 to encourage citizens around the world to hold governments accountable for the promises they made at the September 2000 Millennium Summit, where 189 world leaders agreed to achieve the Millennium Development Goals and eradicate extreme poverty by 2015. The Millennium Campaign in the United States works with a broad array of partners in the non-governmental organization community, youth organizations, the media, Congress, Executive branch, and faith-based organizations to build political will in the United States for the realization of these Goals.

Under the guidance and direct supervision of the North America Coordinator, the UN Advocacy and Communications Associate reinforces capacity of the US & Canada Campaign. The Advocacy and Communications Associate will raise awareness and energize diverse constituencies by helping to develop and implement advocacy campaigns, policy tools and increasing communication and outreach efforts to build the political will in the United States and Canada to achieve the Millennium Development Goals. S/he will work directly under the United Nations Millennium Campaign Coordinator for North America and will work closely with the Deputy Director for Communications in New York and will be an integral part of the Campaign’s communications and advocacy teams. He/She will also work closely with Millennium Campaign Global team as well as the United Nations Foundation and Better World Campaign.

Summary of Key Functions:

  • Recruit and nurture relationships with key allies and partner organizations; develop new and diverse constituencies at the local, state and national level.
  • Support for and implementation of advocacy and communications campaigns and strategies for the US & Canada Campaign.
  • Support the elaboration and implementation of the outreach, mobilization and publications strategies and plans for the Campaign.
  • Assist with the maintenance of websites, databases and knowledge management systems

Recruit and nurture relationships with key allies and partner organizations;

  • Develop and implement collaborative strategies and leverage mass actions, including the Stand Up campaign.
  • Stand Up is an opportunity for people all over the world from all walks of life to actively participate in a high-profile global action in support of the achievement of the Millennium Development Goal. In 2008, 116 million people in more than 100 countries took part in this initiative.
  • Identify, build, and develop new and diverse constituencies at the local, state and national level.
  • Engage volunteers and interns to assist with mobilization efforts and other key moments.
  • Coordinate the development and procurement of campaign related materials, guides, toolkits and other audio-video material useful for campaigning.
  • Participate in planning and implementing of conferences and events.

Ensures support for elaboration and implementation of the advocacy strategy for the Campaign focusing on the achievement of the following results:

  • Increased awareness of the MDGs using grassroots marketing and communications strategies to cultivate individuals and groups in throughout the United States and Canada.
  • In coordination with the UN Millennium Campaign and United Nations Foundation communications units, develop and maintain relationships with the media, including key reporters, columnists, bloggers, editorial boards, radio and local television stations.
  • Assist with the creation of original content such as op-eds, action alerts, resources, issue updates, activist newsletter, announcements, etc;
  • Assist with the development of promotional and educational materials (fliers, one-pagers, toolkits, etc.)
  • Keep abreast of issues relating to the MDGs and work with the global teams and coalition partners to gather and track issue updates and reports by attending relevant meetings and monitoring events.


Ensures the development, maintenance of websites, databases and knowledge management systems in close consultation with UN Millennium Campaign Deputy Director, Communications and the  Web Manager / Focal Point and the communications focal points of the UN Millennium Campaign  focusing on the achievement of the following results:

  • Prepare content for the Endpoverty2015.org website.
  • Develop electronic news alerts; event notifications, etc.
  • Create and maintain contact lists and calendar

Qualifications et expériences requises

  • Master’s degree in communications, international development or related field.
  • 2-3 years of relevant experience in campaigning, communications, advocacy, international organizations, including the United Nations, and work with civil society organizations on international development issues.
  • Experience in working on foreign policy issues and with the US and/or the Canadian governments, with a preference for an individual who has understands issues of development, trade, and in particular the Millennium Development Goals and the current challenges posed by climate change, the financial crisis and the food crisis.
  • Experience in the usage of computers and office software packages, experience in handling of web based management systems including basic html and experience with content management system, Drupal preferred
  • Experience in working with communications, public relations, and media outlets.
    Fluency in English is required; Working knowledge of Spanish or French is highly desirable.
