Grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, UN Women will work for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

In collaboration with relevant UN Women sections at Headquarters and the field, the Training Centre develops and implements training for gender equality within UN Women’s strategic priorities with and for government and civil society partners, the UN system, and UN Women staff. It develops training programmes in gender equality and empowerment of women, in close partnership with ICT ILO and other UN training institutions, making maximum use of on-line training techniques and learning approaches.

The Training Specialist post is based at UN Women Training Centre in Santo Domingo. Under the overall guidance and direction of the supervisor and in close collaboration with other sections at UN Women HQ, the incumbent will exercise responsibility for planning, implementing and managing UN Women training programmes/activities under portfolio.

Summary of key functions:

  • Support the overall planning and design of training courses, manuals and tools and the implementation of the Training Centre’s Strategic Plan;
  • Develop training courses and tools in accordance with the Training Centre’s methodology for course design and in line with the priority areas resulting from the needs assessment;
  • Supervise the packaging, piloting and roll out of training courses;
  • Develop partnerships for curricula development;
  • Apply new technologies to the development of online courses and support the consolidation and development of online platforms.

Support the overall planning and design of training courses, manuals and tools and the implementation of the Training Centre’s Strategic Plan:

  • Participate in the preparation of annual work plans for training/capacity building;
  • Support and contribute to the development and implementation of the Centre’s pedagogical and training framework;
  • Evaluate the adequacy of existing training tools and make pedagogic adaptions as needed;
  • Identify and respond to training needs for UN Women and UN system staff;
  • Prepare concept notes, project profiles, road maps and budgets for the development of training courses, manuals and tools;
  • Support the implementation and monitoring of the UN Women Training Centre’s Strategic Plan;
  • Provide substantive inputs to analytical work of the UN Women Training Centre;
  • Support promote the work of the UN Women Training Centre.

Develop training courses and tools in accordance with the Training Centre’s methodology for course design and in line with the priority areas resulting from the survey:

  • Map existing available courses, tools and training needs on selected topics analyzing existing trends, gaps and challenges in training for gender equality in the specific topic area and identifying suitable methodologies for training with different audiences;
  • Prepare concept notes and project profiles for training courses and tools to be developed in accordance with the Training Centre’s annual work plan;
  • Supervise the development of courses following the Training Centre methodologies and approach;
  • Organize peer review processes for training courses and materials;
  • Supervise the editing, translation and packaging of developed course content, as needed;
  • Implement pedagogical principles and best practices into developing, implementing and evaluating training programmes;
  • Organize pilot testing for each course developed;
  • Implement training for gender equality courses using different delivery modalities;
  • Monitor delivery of work against plans and report on progress;
  • Participate in the preparation of annual work plans for training/capacity building.

Supervise the packaging, piloting and roll out of training courses:

  • Determine the learning mode (e-learning, face to face, blended);
  • Lead the procurement process and supervise the contracted work;
  • Define and coordinate the delivery channel;
  • Coordinate the translation to other languages and packaging of the new language versions;
  • Monitor delivery of work against plans and report on progress;
  • In collaborate with Communications Unit, support the widespread promotion of the training courses, manuals and tools;
  • Liaise with partners for delivery and replication of the training courses;
  • Support the regular evaluation of training courses, manuals and lead revision of materials when necessary;
  • Implement pedagogical best practices for packaging, piloting and roll out of courses.

Develop partnerships for curricula development:

  • Lead in the establishment of partnerships with reputable training entities within and outside the UN System;
  • Develop partnerships with individual and institutional experts in thematic areas covered by course development.

Apply new technologies to the development of online courses and support the consolidation and development of online platforms:

  • Lead in the application of new technologies to the development of online courses and training materials;
  • Keep abreast of available technology and apply it appropriately in the work of the Centre;
  • Keep abreast of new developments, approaches and best practices on gender training;
  • Support the field offices in the identification of trainers, as requested;
  • Keep abreast of new online tools, surveys and other tools;
  • Contribute to knowledge networks and communities of practice;
  • Support the implementation of online learning activities such as preparing online discussions and coordinating and hosting webinars;
  • Create and upload new learning and institutional content to the eLearning platform/virtual campus, including courses modules, materials, etc..

Impact of Results

The post has an impact on the overall effectiveness and success of UN Women Training Centre interventions and activities. Efficient and prompt delivery of services will contribute to positioning the Training Centre as the leader in Training for Gender Equality among the UN training institutions.

Qualifications et expériences requises

Education:

  • Master degree or equivalent in Education, Gender, Social Sciences, International Development, or other related fields.

Experience:

  • A minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible experience in the fields of pedagogy, training/capacity development related to Gender and/or Development, Education, or other related areas;
  • Experience at the international level is highly desirable;
  • Experience in the design and management of e-Learning materials is highly desirable;
  • Experience with the UN system is highly desirable.

Languages:

  • Excellent communication skills in written and spoken English is required;
  • Knowledge of additional official UN language is desirable.

In July 2010, the United Nations General Assembly created UN Women, the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women. The creation of UN Women came about as part of the UN reform agenda, bringing together resources and mandates for greater impact. It merges and builds on the important work of four previously distinct parts of the UN system (DAW, OSAGI, INSTRAW and UNIFEM), which focused exclusively on gender equality and women's empowerment.
