UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

The Office of the Executive Director of UN Women is looking for a dynamic individual to support the activity of the Senior Communications Advisor and Speechwriter in responding to the demand for speeches and presentations by the Under-Secretary-General / Executive Director as well as articles, op-eds, statements and social media. S/he will have excellent writing and communication skills, including social media and internal communications.

Under the direct supervision of the Senior Communications Advisor and Speechwriter, the Junior Speechwriter will write and tailor clear, well-argued, well researched draft speeches and statements, opinion editorials and tweets, as required, for the Executive Director (ED). The Junior Speechwriter will be required to translate politically sensitive and complex economic material into clear, understandable language that is accessible to a broad audience and accurately reflects the Executive Director’s ideas and the position of UN Women.

The Junior Speechwriter will liaise with departments and individuals within UN Women, the UN system and outside of the UN to prepare materials for the ED that are timely and relevant.

Devoirs et responsabilités

  Prepare, edit and tweet messages for the Executive Director:

  • Draft speeches, statements and video-messages for the Executive Director;
  • Draft articles, prefaces and introductions, as requested;
  • Maintain twitter account for the Executive Director;
  • Make a first quality assessment of input received from Directorates and revise the substance, length and syntax, as necessary.

Provide research support to the Senior Speechwriter:

  • Carry out research on the full spectrum of United Nations and UN Women publications to provide relevant facts and figures, especially on -but not limited to- gender equality;
  • Identify the latest news, and reports and studies by other international organizations on topics that the Executive Director will be addressing in coming speeches and retrieve relevant ideas, facts and figures;
  • Monitor keynote speeches by prominent stakeholders in the international arena.

Provide drafting and editing support to the strategic agenda of the Executive Director:

  • Draft mission reports to convey the main developments and outcomes of those missions;
  • Draft and review the content of messages to the staff to convey important developments, brief on the outcomes of missions of the Executive Director and inform on executive/management decisions.

Support effective and timely management of the Executive Director’s communications pipeline and assignments:

  • Assist the Senior Speechwriter and Communications Advisor in ensuring that the diversity of communications products and deliverables required by the Executive Director (speeches, video messages, OpEds, etc.) are completed on time and with the adequate standards of quality.

Qualifications et expériences requises

Education:

  • Masters or equivalent in journalism, communications, political science, economics, international development, international relations, public administration or any other relevant discipline.

Experience:

  • At least two years of experience in high-level writing projects, especially in drafting speeches but also editorials, op-eds, and other internal and external publications;
  • Experience in social media, including Twitter;
  • Experience in managing projects within strict deadlines;
  • Prior experience of working in research, policy analysis, multilateral cooperation and promoting gender equality and women’s empowerment is strongly desired;
  • Experience of working in a multilateral organization is an advantage.

Languages:

  • Fluency in English is required;
  • Working knowledge of another official UN language is an asset.

In July 2010, the United nations General Assembly created UN Women, the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women. The creation of UN Women came about as part of the UN reform agenda, bringing together resources and mandates for greater impact. It merges and builds on the important work of four previously distinct parts of the UN system (DAW, OSAGI, INSTRAW and UNIFEM), which focused exclusively on gender equality and women’s empowerment.
