Historique

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security. Placing women’s rights at the center of all its efforts, UN Women will lead and coordinate United Nations System efforts to ensure that commitments on gender equality and gender mainstreaming translate into action throughout the world. It will provide strong and coherent leadership in support of Member States’ priorities and efforts, building effective partnerships with civil society and other relevant actors.

Economic empowerment is one of the priority areas of UN Women. UN Women works with Governments and multilateral partners (UNDP, ILO, World Bank, regional development banks) to promote women’s economic empowerment and increase their access to economic opportunities, especially for those who are most excluded.

Around the world, a record number of women are now migrating to seek work and better lives. For many, migration yields these benefits; for others, it carries dangerous risks, such as exploitation in domestic jobs, and vulnerability to violence. Migration policies and practices have been slow to recognize these risks and take steps to make the process safe for women. During the 19 September 2016 UN Summit for Refugees and Migrants, global leaders agreed on the New York Declaration (A/71/150) which launched the preparatory processes towards the adoption of a global compact for safe, orderly and regular migration in 2018. The first phase of the preparatory process (April 2017 to November 2017) will be characterized by several informal thematic sessions, regional consultations and multi-stakeholder meetings. In this context, UN Women will work towards the integration of a gender perspective in the compact, including by providing technical support on how the compact could address women’s human rights. Additionally, the Economic Empowerment Section on behalf of UN Women will also chair an expert working group on addressing women’s human rights in the global compact for migration.

The UN General Assembly resolution on “Violence against women migrant workers” (A/Res/70/130) requested the Secretary-General to report to the seventy-second session of the UN General Assembly on the progress made in implementation of the resolution. In the upcoming months, UN Women will support the preparation of the Secretary-General Report on “Violence against women migrant workers”.

UN Women is part of the Global Migration Group (GMG). The GMG brings together heads of agencies to promote the wider application of all relevant international and regional instruments and norms relating to migration, and encourages the adoption of more coherent, comprehensive and better coordinated approaches to the issue of international migration. UN Women’s role is to ensure the gender perspective in the discussion of migration.

The Economic Empowerment Section is currently closing an EU-funded project on “Promoting and Protecting Women Migrant Worker’s Labour and Human Rights: Engaging with International and National Human Rights Mechanisms to enhance Accountability” which was implemented in three pilot countries: Mexico, Moldova and the Philippines from 2014-2017.
