UN Women Background

Women make enormous contributions to economies, whether in businesses, on farms, as entrepreneurs or employees, or by doing unpaid care work at home. But they also remain disproportionately affected by poverty, discrimination and exploitation. Investing in women’s economic empowerment sets a direct path towards gender equality, poverty eradication and inclusive economic growth.

UN Women CO Liberia Women’s Economic Empowerment Programme Unit is focused on engendering economic analysis and national economy in the Liberia, assisting to develop policy and praxis accountability and monitoring mechanisms for women’s economic empowerment including access and rights to land and productive assets, access to gender friendly markets, gender parity in wages, safe migration and usage of technology to ease women’s lives.

Unit/ Project Background:

UN Women works with women’s networks and structures and with the Government of Liberia to shape laws, policies and programmes on all issues that affect their lives and opportunities and to remove gender insensitive barriers. UN Women supports the leadership and participation of women and girls in finding solutions to their problems and issues that affect their lives, especially improved food and nutrition security and enhanced rural livelihoods, access to land, management of natural resources, education, prevention of violence against women and girls, water, sanitation and hygiene, maternal and newborn health and so on.

The position of the Women’s Economic Empowerment Intern is expected to strategically support UN Women Liberia Country Office work in Women’s Economic Empowerment pillar. The intern is expected to work under the overall leadership of the Country Representative, and direct supervision of the Deputy Country Representative. The position is based in the capital of Liberia, Monrovia, with limited travel to the counties.

Devoirs et responsabilités

Under the overall guidance from the UN Women Country Representative and direct supervision of the UN Women Deputy Country Representative, the Intern will provide support to the Economic Empowerment Program Manager as described below:

  • Provide support gender interventions across sector, with major focus on women’s and girls’ economic empowerment with emphases on the ownership and participation in management of land and natural resources;
  • In close collaboration with stakeholders’ support processes to undertake formative research including developing evidence-based strategies and tools;
  • Support the development of knowledge and communications products capturing UN Women gender equality results in economic empowerment programme;
  • Support the capacity building of staff/stakeholders including women groups and networks in the area of economic empowerment of women and girls and other gender-related topics;
  • Support information sharing between UN Women and Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection and other relevant stakeholders in regards to the various thematic areas as they relate gender and the empowerment of women;
  • Provide assistance in documenting lessons learned in gender, women’s land ownership and management of land and natural resources.

Deliverables:

Provide support to the Economic Empowerment Programme Manager on the implementation of the Economic Empowerment program including organizing and coordinating various initiatives such as workshops, meetings, consultation and documentation.

Qualifications et expériences requises

Education:

  • The intern must have obtained university degree in Economics, Gender, International development or other related subject at the university level and must be enrolled in a post graduate program or be enrolled in the final academic year of a university degree programme (minimum Master's level or equivalent, PhD preferred); or have post graduated with a university degree as stated above;
  • Certificate in Women’s and Gender studies will be considered a distinct advantage;
  • Knowledge and experience of working with statistical software and quantitative and qualitative research skills and experience desirable.

Language:

  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral) in English are required;
  • Working knowledge of another UN language a distinct advantage.

Application Information:

Applicants to the United Nations internship programme must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:

  • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
  • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent, Master and PhD preferred);
  • Have graduated with a university degree (as above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within one year;
  • UN Women internship programme does not provide a salary or remuneration for the internship;
  • All the expenses connected with the internship will be borne by the intern, sponsoring Government or institution;
  • UN Women accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness or death incurred during the internship and the intern has to provide medical insurance;
  • The intern is responsible for obtaining necessary visas and arranging travel to and from the duty station where the internship will be performed.
  • The intern must provide proof of enrollment in a health insurance plan, proof of school enrollment, a scanned copy of his/her passport, two letters of recommendation, and application.
