The Social and Environmental Compliance Unit (SECU) is UNDP’s independent social and environmental compliance review mechanism, conducting independent investigations ensuring UNDP adheres to its own standards and procedures, in particular the Social and Environmental Standards (SES).

The SES apply to UNDP projects and programmes. SECU is housed within the Office of Audit and Investigations (OAI) and forms one of the two units that comprise UNDP’s Accountability Mechanism, the other being a dispute resolution function located in headquarters’ management team.

The operations of the SECU within OAI are ongoing and require support, with a particular emphasis on raising awareness of SECU, conducting outreach campaigns, coordinating our social media presence, assisting in policy research, providing logistical support for events (such as conferences, presentations, missions, and meetings), maintaining relevant records (such as note taking) and supporting its operations, including the possibility of assisting in specific compliance review cases. SECU is seeking an intern to aid in these functions.

Devoirs et responsabilités

Under the overall supervision of the SECU Research Analyst / Unit Coordinator, the Intern will be asked to complete tasks from the following:

  • Assists in policy and/or factual research;

  • Assists in social media, traditional media and other outreach/communication campaigns;

  • Assists in editing, formatting, and drafting relevant documents;

  • Assists in identifying, collating and analysing potential evidence;

  • Assists in event and logistics coordination, including conferences that SECU would organize itself and ones that SECU would attend/present at;

  • Assists in various administrative tasks, such as note-taking;

  • Assists in the intake and processing of SECU complaints and/or Dispute Resolution requests;

  • Undertakes other related functions as requested by the SECU Research Analyst / Unit Coordinator or others at OAI/SECU;

  • If multilingual, assists in translations and translation quality control of relevant documents, as well as outreach/inreach in other languages;

  • Possesses a willingness to be adaptive, take on extra responsibility, be proactive and willing to help on whatever needs assistance.

Qualifications et expériences requises

  • Currently enrolled in a bachelors or advanced degree program, or has graduated within one year of obtaining a bachelors or advanced degree, in a related field such as communications, marketing, law, international development, international affairs, human/environmental rights law, international public policy or other related field;

  • Enrolled in or recently graduated from (within one year) a relevant graduate degree program, preferred;

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office programs (word, power point, excel) required;

  • Fluency in written and spoken English required; proficiency in French and/or Spanish highly desirable;

  • Knowledge of social media platforms required;

  • Proficiency in other languages, particularly Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian, Arabic, Chinese, Hindi, Portuguese, Malay/Indonesian, desirable;

  • Knowledge of graphic design software (Adobe suite, etc) and online communications tools (Mail Chimp, Survey Monkey, etc) desirable;

  • Interest and/or experience in international development, social/human rights, environmental policy, labor rights, gender equality, indigenous people’s rights, desirable

Additional Information

  • Internship is located at UNDP Headquarters in New York City;

  • Internship will be full or near-full time (3-5 days per week, with flexibility);

  • Internship to start sometime in Fall 2017 and end sometime in Spring 2018 (as close to but no more than 6 months)

  • Individual must be able to reside and intern in the United States. The UNDP is unable to sponsor visas.

  • Internship is unpaid. The intern must find his/her own lodging and secure funding from outside sources, or fund him/herself for the duration of the internship.
