Historique

Over the past decade more than 1.5 billion people have been affected by disasters that have cost at least US$ 1.3 trillion. Climate change, weak governance, and an increasing concentration of people and assets in areas exposed to natural hazards are driving disaster risk upwards, especially in poor and fragile countries. UNDP’s support to countries on climate change and disaster resilience is shaped by three important global agreements: the Paris Agreement on Climate Change, the Sendai Framework on Disaster Risk Reduction, and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

UNDP works with countries to help them reduce greenhouse gases and advance a long-term goal of risk-informed zero-carbon development. At the same time, we work together with partners to adapt to the impacts of climate change, enhance access to clean energy, reduce the risk of disasters and, where needed, support resilient disaster recovery. Taken all together, these efforts are the path towards sustainable development that is risk-informed, zero-carbon and resilient.  

UNDP’s work integrates issues of climate, disaster risk and energy at the country level, focusing on resilience building and ensuring development remains risk-informed and sustainable. To do this we assist governments in systematically and comprehensively delivering on risk-informed development through the communication, reduction and management of risk. 

To support the achievement of UNDP’s strategic plan outcomes, as well as global agendas i.e. Paris Agreement on Climate Change, Sendai Framework of Actions for DRR and the sustainable development goals, the UNDP Climate Change and Disaster Risk Reduction team (CDT), under the Bureau for Policy and Programme Support (BPPS) focuses on four thematic areas:

  • Disaster Risk Reduction
  • Climate Change
  • Disaster Recovery
  • Sustainable Energy

To support these CDT thematic areas, the CDT partnership team posted in Geneva works more specifically on initiatives and programmes focused on partnership engagement and global knowledge management. Two interns are required to work on some of the diverse work of the team.

A first position is to support some of the key programmes being implemented out of Geneva around risk and preparedness:

  • Get Airport Ready for Disasters (GARD); a public-private partnership in collaboration with Deutsche Post-DHL;
  • UNDP-DRR and Climate Risk Management Portfolio Management; this tool aims at covering all UNDP-funded projects worldwide in the areas of DRR, climate and energy, and serves as a base to analyze trends, financial expenditures, involvement in sub-sectors, and extract key results at country level;
  • Reference group on Risk, Early Warning and Preparedness; this is an IASC sub body group.  The Group seeks to enhance preparedness to respond of the IASC system and, leveraging capability developed for this outcome, to develop preparedness of national and local actors. The work of the Group is primarily related to IASC WG Priority 1 – Effective Response to Emergencies and Protracted Crises -, although the Group supports other Priorities, in particular preparedness elements of the IASC priority on Financing.

Secondly, an intern position is required to work with the team on a range of private sector and insurance for development work including:

  • Several new and high-profile platforms for private sector financing of climate action at the country level;
  • Our growing work in the insurance sector, which includes work on micro-insurance, natural capital insurance and investmetns;
  • Supporting work on a developing portfolio of private sector work, especially around climate investments;
  • Additionally, aspects of our resource mobilization work, including communications, will be a part of the function.


Devoirs et responsabilités

The objective of this internship is to provide support in implementation CDT partnership programme/projects in drafting various reports, support research analysis, communication articles and creation of various online tools & documents that is required to keep the team work streamlined.

Intern One:

The internship will be part of the Climate Change and Disaster Risk Reduction Team (CDT) under the overall umbrella of the CDT partnership advisor based in Geneva with reporting and working closely with the programme analyst, the intern will perform the following duties and responsibilities:

  • Support the manager in preparation of documents and support the arrangement of the project steering committee and board meeting;
  • Support preparation of document for donor reach-out and resource mobilization for initiatives implemented by Geneva CDT Partnership team;
  • Assist development of communication materials, articles, blogs, social media kit, reports for the GARD programme activities;
  • Support management of the GARD one-drive group including updating the files, developing a quick summary of the results, adding new members to the group etc;
  • Update the one drive group of CDT portfolio management.  Review the existing files and updates the folder with the recent database; Support to draft two pagers of info-graphic charts of the CDT portfolio for circulation to UNDP wide. 

Intern Two:

The second intern will report to the special advisor, external engagement within the climate/disaster/energy team of UNDP. Their primary responsibility will be to:

  • Support all the work across insurance and private sector activities;
  • Undertake bespoke research into key areas relevant to these sectors;
  • Support the management of the work by contributing to document management, retrieval and overall good practice;
  • Support resource mobilization attempts for all of the team’s work;
  • Support communications for the team, in collaboration with other colleagues in New York.

Qualifications et expériences requises

  • Enrolled graduate student in economics/ sociology/ development studies/ political science/ international relations or related programme;
  • Experience in database management or interest in developing skills and expertise in this area;
  • Excellent speaking and writing skills in English are essential and fluency in another UN official language (French and/or Spanish) is desirable;
  • Sound computer skills and experience using the Internet and web based applications;
  • Working experience in drafting and developing communication materials for projects/programs will be an asset.

Internships Conditions:

  • Interns are not considered staff members of UNDP and may not represent UNDP in any official capacity;
  • Interns are not entitled to financial support (salary or any other compensation) from UNDP;
  • Interns are not covered by UNDP for medical, health or life insurance and have to have their own international medical and life insurance;
  • The purpose of the Internship Programme is not to lead to further employment with UNDP but to complement an intern’s studies. Therefore, there should be no expectation of employment at the end of an internship. Candidates are not eligible to apply for, or be appointed, to any post for a period of three months following the end of the internship;
  • The normal duration of an internship is from six weeks to 6 months (which is the maximum duration);
  • The intern needs to be enrolled as a graduate or final year Bachelor’s student throughout the duration of the internship or be within one year of graduation from a Bachelor’s, Master’s or Ph.D. programme;
  • The intern will be evaluated at the end of the contract and due recognition of work will be issued in writing.
