Grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, UN Women is working for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security. Placing women’s rights at the center of all its efforts, UN Women is leading and coordinating the United Nations System to ensure that commitments on gender equality and gender mainstreaming translate into action throughout the world. It is providing strong and coherent leadership in support of Member States’ priorities and efforts, building effective partnerships with civil society and other relevant actors.

Recognizing the unprecedented opportunities as well as the challenges of rapid innovation and technological development for gender equality and women empowerment and the importance of innovation to benefit women and men equally, UN Women has included innovation as one of the “drivers of change” in its Strategic Plan 2018-2021. UN Women’s innovation strategy aims to leverage innovation and technology to accelerate the achievement of gender equality and women’s empowerment. UN Women’s innovation strategy takes a partnership approach to focus on developing the market for innovations that advance gender equality and women’s empowerment; promoting a gender-responsive approach to the innovation cycle; promoting innovations created by women, for women; and de-risking high impact innovations that benefit marginalized women.

Under the supervision of Head of Innovation and technology the Programme Analyst is responsible for providing technical advice to co-identify and design UN Women innovation and technology investments ; coordinating and facilitating implementation of UN Women’s innovation and technology investments; liaising with UN and other partners, including innovation incubators and accelerators to promote collaboration and strengthen partnerships, and strengthening UN Women’s knowledge management and internal capacity on innovation and technology.


Devoirs et responsabilités

Provide technical advice to co-identify and design UN Women innovation and technology investments:

  • Provide analytical, research and technical support to UN Women in identifying key innovations and technologies that have the potential to accelerate the achievement of gender equality and women’s empowerment;
  • Engage with UN Women Country Offices and HQ units to conduct joint needs assessments and define business requirements;
  • Engage with UN Women and solution providers, including software developers to translate business requirements into technical specifications;
  • Provide inputs to project documents/proposals to testing innovation and technology initiatives, with a view towards scaling successful pilots to accelerate the achievement of gender equality and women’s empowerment.

Coordinate and facilitate implementation of UN Women’s innovation and technology investments:

  • Work closely with UN Women offices, ICT department and solution providers to ensure the development of high quality development, with functionality and usability that meets the needs of women;
  • Ensure regular and clear communication between innovation project teams, including arranging coordination meeting, taking and sharing notes, ensuring follow-up;
  • Monitor implementation of innovation projects, elevating issues and risks to the head of the innovation unit as required;
  • Draft progress reports based on inputs from implementation teams.

Liaise with UN and other partners, including innovation incubators and accelerators to promote collaboration and strengthen partnerships:

  • Participate in the UN Innovation Network and share experiences, lessons learned and best practices from UN Women;
  • Share updates with UN and other partners on implementation of UN Women’s innovation strategy;
  • Identify opportunities for collaboration on innovation and technology initiatives with other UN agencies and partners.

Strengthen UN Women’s knowledge management and internal capacity on innovation and technology:

  • In collaboration with UN Women offices and units, develop knowledge and communication products about UN Women’s innovation work;
  • Keep UN Women intranet and external website on innovation updated;
  • Organize UN Women brownbags and expert talks on leveraging innovation and technology to accelerate gender equality and women’s empowerment;
  • Provide technical inputs to implementation of UN Women’s internal capacity development plan on gender-responsive innovation and technology.  

Perform other duties as requested by Head of Innovation and Technology.

Key Performance Indicators:

  • Timely and quality technical and analytical support to the identification and design on innovation and technology investments as per workplan;
  • Timely and regular communication with and feedback to stakeholders within UN women and outside UN women;
  • Regular monitoring of progress;
  • Timely updates and dissemination of experience, lessons learned and best practices.

Functional Competencies:

  • Familiarity with the work of UN Women and other multilateral, bilateral and civil society development partners;
  • Technical expertise in innovation and technology;
  • Knowledge of gender issues, human rights and development cooperation;
  • Sound understanding of IT and proficient IT skills;

Qualifications et expériences requises

Education:

  • Minimum of Master’s degree in communications, journalism, international development or related disciplines.

Experience:

  • A minimum of 2 years of experience in innovation and technology;
  • Experience in gender issues;
  • Experience with project management;
  • Prior experience in the UN will be an asset;
  • Prior experience in engaging with the private sector, academic institutions and innovation incubators/accelerators will be an asset.

Languages:

  • Fluency in English is required;
  • Knowledge of the other UN official working language is an asset.

The creation of UN Women came about as part of the UN reform agenda, bringing together resources and mandates for greater impact. It merges and builds on the important work of four previously distinct parts of the UN system (DAW, OSAGI, INSTRAW and UNIFEM), which focused exclusively on gender equality and women's empowerment.
