UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.  UN Women supports UN Member States as they set global standards for achieving gender equality, and works with governments and civil society to design laws, policies, programmes and services needed to implement these standards. It stands behind women’s equal participation in all aspects of life, focusing on five priority areas; increasing women’s leadership and participation; ending violence against women; engaging women in all aspects of peace and security processes; enhancing women’s economic empowerment; and making gender equality central to national development planning and budgeting. UN Women also coordinates and promotes the UN system’s work in advancing gender equality.

UN Women’s coordination function and field operations support the implementation of international and regional norms and standards, while also informing the development of those norms and standards with country-level realities, through policy advocacy, knowledge generation and strategic plan and strengthen UN Women’s comparative advantage in country-level advocacy, including by supporting the integration of gender equality issues in all development sectors.

This internship is expected to build and support the efforts of UN Women Bangladesh office in advocacy and outreach. It is expected that the communications intern will help UN Women Bangladesh obtain enhanced advocacy visibility, thus strengthening organization’s credibility and brand as a lead agency to promote gender equality and the empowerment of women through positive transformation of social norms, attitudes and behaviors.

The purpose of this internship is to support planning and executing communications tasks to share and promote information on thematic areas of UN Women, research and data, workshops and events, and programmatic results. The intern will receive overall supervision from the Communications Analyst.

Communications and Documentation:

  • Support the implementation of a communications strategy for UN Women Bangladesh to increase its visibility and public engagement in alignment with SDG 5 and Planet 5050 Initiative;
  • Support the maintenance of social media pages, draft creative content and plan an overall outreach strategy
  • Support the team to write and monitor stories on gender-related issues and events to promote UN Women programme activities in Bangladesh;
  • Support in designing campaigns to reach out to wider audiences during UN Women thematic days such as UN Day (24 Oct), International day for the Elimination of Violence against Women (25 November), Human Rights Day (10 December), the 16 Days of Activism, and International Women’s Day;
  • Develop a database of local media houses with their contact information
  • Review and edit, from a communications perspective, submitted knowledge products such as narrative reports, research reports, evaluation reports, videos and etc.;
  • Assist in regular managing and monitoring UN Women Bangladesh webpage and social media accounts.
  • Production of stories, knowledge resources, presentations, and background material for internal and external use;
  • Produce press- and media related material, such as press releases and social media messages;
  • Quality edits provided to knowledge products;
  • Effective coordination support of messaging during thematic days;
  • Quality communications-related support provided to global campaigns, the 16 Days of Activism, and International Women’s Day.

Qualifications et expériences requises

Education:

  • The intern must have studied in journalism, communications, marketing, gender studies, social sciences, or other similar subject at the university level;
  • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.

Language:

  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral) in English and Bangla is required; Working knowledge of another UN language a distinct advantage;

Interns are not financially remunerated by UN Women as per the common UN policy.

Application Information:

  • Selected applicants must provide the internship application, two letters of recommendation, proof of health insurance and school enrollment, passport, and visa (if applicable).

UN Women Internship Policy:

1.) Applicants to the United Nations internship programme must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:

(a)    Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);

(b)    Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent);

(c)    Have graduated with a university degree (as (b) above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.

2.) UN Women internship programme does not provide a salary or remuneration for the internship;

3.) All the expenses connected with the internship will be borne by the intern, sponsoring Government or institution;

4.) UN Women accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness or death incurred during the internship;

5.) The intern is responsible for obtaining necessary visas and arranging travel to and from the duty station where the internship will be performed;

6.) Interns are not eligible to apply for, or be appointed to, any post in UN WOMEN during the period of the internship or for six months immediately following the expiration date of internship;

7.) The intern must provide proof of enrollment in a health insurance plan, proof of school enrollment, a scanned copy of his/her passport, two letters of recommendation, and application.
