The Office of the Resident Coordinator in South Africa coordinates the joint work of the United Nations Country Team (UNCT) by providing support to the preparation and implementation the Strategic Cooperation Framework between the Government of South Africa and the United Nations (SCF 2013-2017 extended to 31 March 2019).

The UNCT in South Africa is seeking to enhance the capacity of the RCO with internship support for the implementation of the current Strategic Cooperation Framework (SCF) with the Government.  The South Africa country office is not a ‘Delivering as One ‘DaO country, however progress to aligning the work of the UN system in South Africa to efficiently and effectively deliver results in support of national priorities, as well as serve as a preparation towards being a DaO country is being made.

The UN system, is almost at the end of the current programming cycle with preparation being underway for the development of the next programming cycle. To facilitate division of labour and better reporting of results on the coherence of joint UN programme in the country, the Office of the Resident Coordinator in South Africa requires an intern in the field of Communications to highlight the work UN in South Africa.

Devoirs et responsabilités

Under the direct supervision of Coordination Associate and the general management of the United Nations Communication Group Chairperson,

  • The intern will develop and maintain media and partnerships databases. Formulate and implement a joint strategy to maintain open communication with partners to implement commitments. Assist with development, production of knowledge products and reporting for joint work on different media platforms.
  • Provides support to effective advocacy of UN activities in close consultation with United Nations Information Centre and the communication focal points of the UN system.
  •  Assist with the organisation of specific events, meetings and activities and the provision of assistance to inter-agency working groups and committees. Provision of logistical support to the Strategic Cooperation Framework (SCF) results and theme groups.
  • Monitoring of activities in the Office of the Resident Coordinator.

Compétences

  • Excellent English writing and editing skills; and
  • A demonstrated ability to clearly communicate development ideas and experiences.

Qualifications et expériences requises

Education:

  • Current enrolment in or recently graduated from graduate-level degree programme in Communications, Journalism, Media, Social Sciences, or related field.

Experience:

  • Experience in organizing meetings, taking minutes and maintaining effective records and other administrative work;
  • Experience in designing and implementing communication and/or media outreach plans;
  • Excellent computer knowledge.

Language:

  • Excellent written and spoken English language.

Internship Conditions:

A few key points regarding internships with UNDP:

  • Interns are not financially remunerated by UNDP. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses  are the responsibility of  the nominating institution, related institution or government, which may provide the required financial assistance to its students; or the intern, who will have to obtain financing for subsistence through private sources.
  • Interns are responsible for securing adequate medical insurance for the duration of their internship with UNDP and must provide a medical certificate of good health prior to starting the internship. UNDP will not reimburse the medical insurance of the intern. Any costs arising from accidents and illness incurred during an internship assignment will be the responsibility of the intern. 
  • The intern is responsible for obtaining necessary visas and arranging travel to and from the duty station where the internship will be performed;
  • UNDP accepts no responsibility for loss or damage to personal effects that may occur during the internship. 
  • Interns are not eligible to apply for, or be appointed to, any post in UNDP during the period of the internship;
  • The intern must provide proof of enrollment in health insurance plan;
  • Interns are not staff members and may not represent UNDP in any official capacity;

Subsequent Employment:

  • The purpose of the Internship Programme is not to lead to further employment with UNDP but to complement an intern’s studies. Therefore, there should be no expectation of employment at the end of an internship.
