Historique

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security. Placing women’s rights at the Centre of all its efforts, UN Women leads and coordinates United Nations System efforts to ensure that commitments on gender equality and gender mainstreaming translate into action throughout the world. It will provide strong and coherent leadership in support of Member States’ priorities and efforts, building effective partnerships with civil society and other relevant actors.

Ensuring gender equality is central to the achievement of sustainable development goals. Gender equality as a cross-cutting issue, is linked to all other SDGs and has an impact on the overall progress towards SDGs. Women’s spontaneous participation in the labor force is one of the key prerequisites – which would foster national economic growth as well as contribute to the achievements of SDGs. In 2017, High Level Panel (HLP) report identified seven key drivers to accelerate the women’s economic empowerment and also identified four key areas of work, mainly formal and informal economy including women led enterprises and agriculture work. Over the last couple of decades, in Bangladesh, women’s participation in the labor force has increased mainly in formal sector. Readymade garment industries have been emerged as a dominant contributing sector to Bangladesh economy, where women’s participations have been recognized globally. However, still women’s overall labour force participation is very low and women’s contribution to national economy is not accounted for.

UN Women has been working on relevant national policy instruments as well as programmatic interventions on women’s economic empowerment; and closely working with relevant stakeholders including private sector to advance gender equality and women’s empowerment in Bangladesh.

Reporting to the Programme Management Specialist, the Junior National Consultant will undertake research initiatives on ‘women’s economic empowerment and contribution to national economy’ which will include analyzing reports, studies, policy documents- national and international, drafting and preparing synthesis report etc. and facilitate coordination among different bodies.
