UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

Progress of the World’s Women (Progress hereafter) is a flagship report of UN Women. Produced by UN Women’s Research and Data section, the report frames key gender and women’s rights issues for a broad audience of policymakers, advocates and academics. Each report takes up a particular theme and the key elements of the report include a conceptual framework, policy and data analysis, and case studies. There have been seven editions of Progress to date, since 2000.

The upcoming issue of Progress focuses on the theme, ‘Families in a Changing World’. The report will answer the questions: What do families around the world look like, how have they been changing in recent decades and with what implications for women? How can laws, policies and public action support diverse family forms in ways that enable women’s rights to resources, bodily integrity and voice?

It will do so by bringing together high-quality research, innovative data analysis, and compelling case studies to show the plurality of household and family structures across the world; and providing evidence on how public action can ensure that families support women’s and girls’ empowerment. The next edition of the report will be published in the second quarter of 2019.

Devoirs et responsabilités

Under the supervision of the report’s coordinator, the consultant will support the team by providing production coordination and by overseeing the translation process.

 

  • The consultant will help finalize production of the report – i.e. keeping track of comments, errors, fact-checking needs, and other gaps that need to be filled, liaising directly with designers and copy editor as needed.
  • The consultant will assist in coordinating the layout of the report – in liaison with the report coordinator and manager – adhering to the agreed-upon design of the report and UN Women branding guidelines.
  • The consultant will supervise translations of the executive summary (from English to Spanish and French) at first, followed by complementary products as needed, and ultimately the full report, to ensure the translation meets the quality standards of UN Women’s publications. The consultant will liaise between translators, foreign language proofreaders and the report team, as follows:
    • working closely with the English-Spanish translator, and either acting as Spanish proofreader or support external proofreader.
    • oversee English-French translation in general terms, liaising between all parties.

Qualifications et expériences requises

  • Demonstrated experience in coordinating production of large-scale reports or similar project coordination experience.
  • 5-10 years’ editorial experience in Spanish.
  • Excellent command of Spanish (oral and written), English and good command of French is desirable.
  • Knowledge and understanding of gender and development issues and the appropriate terminology.
  • Ability and willingness to meet tight deadlines and produce high-quality work.
