The UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security. Placing women’s rights at the centre of all its efforts, the UN Women will lead and coordinate the United Nations system efforts to ensure that commitments on gender equality and gender mainstreaming translate into action throughout the world. It will provide strong and coherent leadership in support of Member States’ priorities and efforts, building effective partnerships with civil society and other relevant actors.

The Inter-Agency Coordination Specialist is a member of the UN System Coordination Division’s team which forms of the Strategic Partnerships, Coordination and Intergovernmental Bureau of UN Women. The Coordination Division is responsible for implementing UN Women’s Coordination Strategy as it pertains to (1) enhanced UN system coherence and mobilization of joint action (2) increased system-wide gender mainstreaming (3) system-wide application of accountability frameworks on gender equality and the empowerment of women (4) improvement in gender balance and the status of women in the UN system.

Under the guidance of the UN Coordination Advisor the Inter-Agency Coordination Specialist will contribute to and support gender mainstreaming in the UN system, including through providing:

  • Technical contributions to gender mainstreaming in various thematic areas across the UN System and in the context of the 2030 Agenda and the SDGs;
  • Substantive and organizational support to the Inter-Agency Network on Women and Gender Equality (IANGWE) and its task forces;
  • Substantive support to UN Women’s engagement in high-level global coordination mechanisms;
  • Contributions to the preparation of knowledge products and capacity development efforts related to gender mainstreaming.
  • Contribute to UN Women corporate priorities.

Devoirs et responsabilités

Provide technical contributions to gender mainstreaming across the UN System:

  • Provide technical inputs to written reports, documents and communications related to gender mainstreaming across the UN system, e.g. background papers, draft reports, studies, briefing notes and correspondence;
  • Provide substantive support in the planning, organizing and servicing of technical and ad hoc expert group meetings, and multi-stakeholder meetings related to gender equality and/or gender mainstreaming in various thematic areas, including the preparation of meeting reports and summaries;
  • Provide substantive technical support in the reporting, monitoring and analysis of gender mainstreaming in the UN system;
  • Represent the Division at international and other meetings, organize/ participate in working groups, meetings, conferences, and consultations with other UN entities and partners, including Member States, regional organizations and NGOs, as delegated.

Provide substantive and organizational support to the Inter-Agency Network on Women and Gender Equality (IANWGE):

  • Provide substantive and organizational support to the IANWGE and its inter-sessional task forces and working groups, by contributing to its strategic vision and work plans, developing meeting agendas, planning, overseeing logistical arrangements for meetings, issuing regular communications to the Network; servicing IANWGE task forces and working groups; and identifying opportunities for strengthening inter-agency collaboration;
  • Draft opening statements and notes, as required;
  • Provide organizational assistance to the Secretary of the Meetings by drafting reports of the meeting and related correspondence;
  • Strengthen partnerships and cooperation with other UN entities and external partners through regular contact, the exchange of ideas, and the review of progress in implementation of inter-agency and other joint initiatives,  
  • Lead and conceptualize information-sharing on interagency initiatives related to gender mainstreaming and gender equality and women’s empowerment issues.

Provide substantive support to UN Women’s engagement in high-level global coordination mechanisms

  • Provide substantive support to the participation of relevant UN Women senior officials and the Executive Director in the High-Level Committee on Programmes (HLCP) and the Chief Executives Board for Coordination (CEB), including the substantive review of the agenda and background papers, liaison with relevant UN Women organizational divisions/units, and drafting and coordination of briefing notes and related documents;
  • Provide ongoing inputs on behalf of UN Women to draft documents, papers and policies prepared by various HLCP Task Forces, as necessary;
  • Represent UN Women at the pre and post CEB briefings as required.

Participate in knowledge management and capacity building efforts:

  • Provide substantive and organizational support to capacity building workshops on gender mainstreaming in various thematic areas;
  • Provide technical contributions to the conceptualization and development of knowledge products to support knowledge generation and capacity building for gender mainstreaming, including in the context of the 2030 Agenda;
  • Lead the management of the online repository of resources on gender mainstreaming, research, update and populate the repository with the latest resources, best practices and lessons learned;
  • Manage and update webpages related to gender mainstreaming on the UN Women global website.

Contribute to UN Women corporate priorities:

  • Represent the Division in the annual Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) Coordination Working Group;
  • Conceptualize and contribute to preparations for the annual Observance of International Women’s Day.

Perform any other duties as requested by the supervisor.

The Inter-Agency Coordination Specialist, UN Women, impacts on the efforts to support the leading, coordination and promoting the accountability of the United Nations system in its work on gender equality and the empowerment of women at global, regional and Country level.

Qualifications et expériences requises

Education:

  • Master’s degree (or equivalent) in international relations, development studies, gender studies, social sciences, or other related fields. 

Experience:

  • Minimum 5 years of progressively responsible experience working on human rights, gender equality and women’s empowerment issues, including at the international level;
  • Demonstrated experience supporting inter-agency bodies and UN Coordination mechanisms to advance gender equality and the empowerment of women required;
  • Demonstrated experience supporting capacity-building related to gender mainstreaming required;
  • Experience in the UN Common System required.

Languages:

  • Written and oral proficiency in English is required;
  • Knowledge of the other UN working languages is desirable.

The creation of UN Women came about as part of the UN reform agenda, bringing together resources and mandates for greater impact. It merges and builds on the important work of four previously distinct parts of the UN system (DAW, OSAGI, INSTRAW and UNIFEM), which focused exclusively on gender equality and women's empowerment.
