UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

To support member states in implementing the 2030 Agenda, UN Women’s Flagship Programme “Making Every Woman and Girl Count” (MEWGC) aims to affect a radical shift in the availability, accessibility and use of data and statistics on key aspects of gender equality and women’s empowerment. The Programme envisions a multi-year and multi-country programme of work, supported by global and regional activities linking normative and technical work on gender statistics at the global level to the regional and national levels through three interlinked areas of work:

  • Building a supportive policy and institutional environment for the localization and effective monitoring of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs);
  • Increasing the quality, comparability and regularity of gender statistics to address national data gaps and meet reporting commitments under the SDGs; and
  • Ensuring that gender statistics are accessible to users in governments, civil society, academia and the private sector, to strengthen adequate demand for their production.

Located in the Research and Data Section of UN Women (R&D), the Statistics Specialist, SDGs monitoring works under the supervision of the Research Specialist (P-4) to compile global, regional and thematic data for monitoring of the gender-related SDGs targets and indicators and contribute to the maintenance of the gender data portal; contribute to the production of UN Women’s SDGs monitoring publications and other research and data-related activities; and supports the implementation of MEWGC.


Devoirs et responsabilités

Monitor global, regional and thematic gender-related SDGs targets and indicators:

  • Compile data and metadata for global, regional and thematic monitoring of the gender-related SDGs indicators for the SDGs data portal, help maintain data management plan and publication schedule for the portal;
  • Develop data routines using statistical packages, including Stata and R software to automate data compilation, exchange and dissemination processes; including statistical indicators’ calculation and aggregation, data tabulations, charts generation;
  • Establish, strengthen and maintain relationships to facilitate data and metadata exchange with data providers, including national statistical offices;
  • Ensure data quality by researching, collecting and assessing sources of relevant data; including also by verifying data with data providers
  • Provide support to the monitoring of the gender related indicators that UN Women is responsible for;
  • Regularly analyse data for and contribute content that feeds into the UN Women SDG data portal.

Provide technical and research support  to the production of UN Women’s SDGs monitoring publications:

  • Conduct data analysis for R&D’s SDG-related publications, including background research, cutting edge statistical modeling and other quantitative techniques to fill data gaps and forecast trends;
  • Provide quality research and data inputs into various publications produced by Research and Data, including the statistical annexes, technical notes, statistical references, definitions and others;
  • Produce annual SDGs Data Cards and prepare customized data reports for UN Women’s SDGs-related monitoring work;
  • Develop partnerships with National Statistical Offices, Regional Commissions, UN agencies and other data collecting organizations in order to present a wide range of relevant data on gender equality and women’s rights to contribute to the global and thematic monitoring of SDGs;
  • Ensure that data are presented in ways that are accessible and attractive to non-technical audiences in all publications, working with colleagues of the Research and Data (R&D) section;
  • Carry-out background cross-national and country specific research, including literature reviews related to the monitoring of SDGs and relevant research;
  • Provide technical inputs to the conceptualization and drafting of SDG-related publications
  • Identify potential authors of background papers and other research materials for the analytical parts of the reports; assist in commissioning and coordinating their work where requested and comment on their draft papers;
  • Participate technically in proof-reading, data-checking and provide comments on draft chapters and sections of the reports as required, including, if possible, proof-reading of translated text in languages other than English.

Provide research and technical support to UN Women’s country and regional offices to implement  the Flagship Programme Initiative “Making Every Woman and Girl Count (MEWGC)”:

  • Draft technical and guidance notes for use by country and regional project teams of MEWGC;
  • Provide technical support to country and regional project teams of MEWGC, including supporting and providing comments on statistical products such as questionnaires, survey design, indicator production and statistical analysis and provide statistical support for national level SDGs monitoring exercises;
  • Provide technical inputs to methodological research with regard to standards on concepts, definitions and classifications to assist country and regional project teams of MEWGC to strengthen their work on gender statistics;
  • Provide statistical support to UN Women’s policy and programme divisions and perform other tasks, as required to support the implementation of the MEWGC programme.

  • Quality research and data analysis which leads to strong reports;
  • Quality inputs to reports, such as in layout and content;
  • Quality analysis which leads to improved monitoring of the SDGs and implementation of MEWGC;
  • Timely and methodical data management planning for the gender data portal;
  • Timely and quality support to partners in the field as well as other divisions in UN Women.

Qualifications et expériences requises

Education:

  • Master’s degree (or equivalent) in development related disciplines, gender, economics, statistics, development or other social science fields.

Experience:

  • A minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible experience in the collection, compilation, analysis and dissemination of gender statistics or related area;
  • Proven experience in designing analyses of and gathering and presenting data and statistics;
  • Substantial experience of working with international datasets in the field of gender statistics;
  • Experience conducting methodological research on gender statistics a strong asset;
  • Experience with data management for data portals is an asset.

Languages:

  • Fluency in English is required;
  • Knowledge of the other UN official working language is a strong asset.
