Historique

UN Women Background:* UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

Unit/ Project Background: UN Women has been active in Kosovo since 1999 (then still as UNIFEM). UN Women in Kosovo supports local partners’ efforts that focus on implementation of UNSCR 1325, increasing women’s participation in decision-making, promoting the use of gender perspectives in policy development, strengthening the protection of women affected by conflict, reinforcing the capacities at local and central levels to counter gender-based and domestic violence, amplifying calls for accountability and advancing the status of women in post-conflict settings. UN Women in Kosovo chairs the multi-stakeholder Security and Gender Group (SGG), which is composed of representatives from international organizations present in Kosovo, as well as from government institutions and women’s civil society organizations. The aim of the group is to ensure coordination and collaboration on gender and security issues and related activities and undertakings. UN Women aims at ending gender-based discrimination and violence against women in the Western Balkans, with a particular focus on the most disadvantaged groups of women, by implementing the regional programme ‘Implementing Norms, Changing Minds’, funded by the European Union. Through the implementation of the joint project ‘Empowering Youth for a Peaceful, Prosperous, and Sustainable Future in Kosovo’ (with UNDP-UNV/Unicef) UN Women aims at increased leadership capacity and influence of women and young girls to engage in gender-sensitive peacebuilding. With the Joint United Nations Police, Justice and Corrections Support Programme in Kosovo, UN Women strengthens the capacities of key stakeholders on gender-based violence and domestic violence, including of the Police, Judiciary, and shelters at local and central level. UN Women supports the Regional Women’s Lobby for Peace and Security in South-Eastern Europe to work towards strengthening the position of women in democratization and the post-conflict recovery process by advancing justice and reconciliation.

UN Women is also leading activities to mark international advocacy days, such as the 8th of March (International Women’s Day), anniversary of UNSCR 1325 on Women, Peace and Security (October 31) and 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence Campaign (2018 Campaign Facebook Page: https://www.facebook.com/16DaysNoViolence/).
