UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security. Placing women’s rights at the centre of all its efforts, UN Women leads and coordinates United Nations system efforts to ensure that commitments on gender equality and gender mainstreaming translate into action throughout the world.
A global champion for women and girls, UN Women was established to accelerate progress on meeting their needs worldwide. UN Women supports UN Member States as they set global standards for achieving gender equality and works with governments and civil society to design laws, policies, programmes and services needed to ensure that the standards are effectively implemented and truly benefit women and girls worldwide. It works globally to make the vision of the Sustainable Development Goals a reality for women and girls and stands behind women’s equal participation in all aspects of life, focusing on four strategic priorities:
- Women lead, participate in and benefit equally from governance systems
- Women have income security, decent work and economic autonomy
- All women and girls live a life free from all forms of violence
- Women and girls contribute to and have greater influence in building sustainable peace and resilience, and benefit equally from the prevention of natural disasters and conflicts and humanitarian action.
UN Women work in Malawi (2014 – 2018)
UN Women Malawi Country Office is committed to Delivering as One. It has actively been engaged in the UNDAF since 2012 to date and it implements its programmes closely with other UN agencies. For the period 2014 to 2018, the CO priority areas have been on women’s leadership, economic empowerment and elimination of violence against women, governance as cross cutting areas. Humanitarian response, peace and security have also been mainstreamed in the programme.
The following were the result areas:
- Result Area 1: Women lead and participate in decision making at all levels
- Result Area 2: Women, especially the poorest and most excluded, are economically empowered and benefit from development
- Result Area 3: Women and girls live a life free from violence
Development results i: Governance and national planning fully reflect accountability for gender equality commitments and priorities
Devoirs et responsabilités
The overall objective of the assignment is to document results achieved by UN Malawi Country Office during the period of 2014 to 2018.
- To document the work of UN Women and increase visibility of results achieved in promoting gender equality and women empowerment in Malawi.
- To share documented products with various audiences as part of promoting gender equality and women empowerment.
The documentation will be through the following:
- A synthesis report that will highlight key activities, strategies, results achieved during the period. The report will also highlight challenges and lessons learnt. The synthesis report produced herein will be used to show case results achieved to several stakeholders and forums including donors, Malawi Government, Civil Society Organizations, UN implementing partners, communities etc.
- Four booklets on Human Interest Stories Stories that are linked to UN Women results for each of the development results areas.
- Video documentaries, including virtual reality videos for social media and photography that will be used to showcase UN Women’s interventions to promote gender equality and empower women in Malawi.
- Photographs showcasing success stories and results.
Deliverables
- Inception report outlining technical understanding of ToRs, work schedule, timeline, documentary scripts and approaches.
- Presentation of draft products
- Submission of final products which include:
- A synthesis report highlighting key activities, strategies, results and impact achieved
- Four booklets showcasing success stories from targeted districts
- Documentaries and virtual reality videos for social media
- Photographs communicating UN Women’s work and providing visual evidence of UN Women’s results

Qualifications et expériences requises
- University degree at the post-graduate level in the social sciences, media or other relevant field of study and/or professional training;
- Minimum 5 years of experience in development, media, gender, implementation / evaluation of gender projects/programmes;
- Competence in assessment and documentation techniques;
- Excellent analytical and report writing skills;
- Good people and communication skills, including demonstrated ability to lead a team working in similar assignments;
- Previous experience in UN agency an asset
- More than three years of work experience in producing professional high-quality photograph/video
- Outstanding photography/documentary filming skills and record of services with portfolio provided upon request
- Outstanding photo and video editing skills;
- Experience working in remote areas, experience in Malawi rural areas preferred;
- Proven ability to work in multicultural environment.
