Background: 

The UNDP internship program offers a unique opportunity for graduate-level students to acquire direct exposure and deepen their knowledge and understanding of UNDP's work, institutional principles, policies and procedures, gain development work experience to complement their academic activity with practical experience and possibly inspire them on future career paths.   

Organizational Context:

The UNDP Governance Unit supports Angola’s efforts towards good governance through technical assistance. Good governance involves the participation of citizens in politico-administrative processes, policymaking, public decision-making processes and accountability; checks and balances and transparency, and functional and democratic institutions based on rights, justice, rule of law and gender equality. All these conditions are aimed at delivering efficient and effective services and spearhead the country towards the realization of the Sustainable Development Goals. It is the primary responsibility of UNDP’s governance team, in liaison with the other UNDP Country teams, to ensure UNDP delivers this support to Angola.

The INTERN will provide direct assistance to Programme Specialist, Project Managers and Programme Assistant in the Governance Unit on the processes related to programme and project implementation, monitoring, reporting and evaluation; financial management related processes; and support in stakeholder and partner engagement. This assistance will involve key tasks such as research and information gathering, analysis and management; written and direct communication and planning of events and activities with stakeholders and partners; participation in planning and concertation forums with partners; and events organization. As an integral part of the UNDP family, the INTERN will also be able to participate in UNDP’s internal development platforms and working sessions and processes across the entire country office.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Support efficient and effective performance of the Governance Unit through:

  • Research and information gathering, analysis and management
  • Communication with partners and stakeholders
  • Planning and organization of activities and events
  • Follow up on administrative processes with other UNDP Units
  • Administrative support to Programme Specialist in meetings with partners
  • Administrative support to Programme Specialist in public engagements
  • Fulfill other relevant tasks assigned by supervisor and team members.

Impact of Results:
The assigned duties and responsibilities have an impact on the efficiency and effectiveness of the UNDP Governance Unit and its support to Angola. They will help team members to focus more on their primary tasks while relying the INTERN’s support with the complementary duties, while transferring skills and knowledge to the INTERN in the process. Through support to cross-unit office tasks, the INTERN will also contribute to the improvement of the performance of the country office at large.

Qualifications et expériences requises

Education:
 

(a) Be enrolled in a postgraduate degree programme (such as a master’s programme, or higher) in the field of Social Sciences, with priority for Accounting, Political Science, Economics, Development Studies, Business or Public Administration;

(b) Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (such as bachelor’s degree or equivalent in the field of Social Sciences, with priority for Accounting, Political Science, Economics, Development Studies, Business or Public Administration);

(c) Have recently graduated with a university degree (as defined in (a) and (b) above) and, if selected, must start the internship within one-year of graduation;

(d) Be enrolled in a postgraduate professional traineeship program in the field of Social Sciences, with priority for Accounting, Political Science, Economics, Development Studies, Business or Public Administration and undertake the internship as part of this program.

Experience:  

  • No experience required.

Language Requirements:

  • Fluency in Portuguese and good working knowledge of English is required.

Conditions of internship:

  • UNDP internship programme provide a monthly stipend when the intern is not supported by any institution or programme.
  • UNDP accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness or death incurred during the internship. 
  • All the expenses connected with the internship will be borne by the intern, sponsoring government or institutions;
  • The intern must provide proof of enrollment in health insurance plan;
  • UNDP accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness or death incurred during the internship;
  • Interns are not eligible to apply for, or be appointed to, any post in UNDP during the period of the internship;
  • Interns are not staff members and may not represent UNDP in any official capacity.
