Historique

The COVID-19 pandemic is far more than a health crisis: it is affecting societies and economies at their core, destroying lives and livelihoods and eroding the basis for ending poverty and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Failure to provide urgent socio-economic responses would multiply the suffering now.

If not responded urgently and appropriately, the COVID-19 crisis can undermine the progress the region has made with regards to the achievement of SDGs. Draft UN framework for the immediate socio-economic response to COVID-19 aims to provide the strategic intent and blueprint for the operationalization at country level of the Secretary-General’s report on the socio-economic impact of the Covid-19 crisis. It focusses on the time frame of 12 to 18 months as an immediate development offer, to be implemented by UN Country Teams, and complementing the Humanitarian response and the WHO sponsored Global Strategic Preparedness and Response Plan focused on the direct health response.

The UNCT Fiji has developed a draft ToR for the Joint Socioeconomic Impact Assessment of COVID-19 in the Pacific aiming to inform the programmatic design and planning for UN’s support for Governments during the post-COVID-19 recovery phase.

The overall objectives of the Socioeconomic Impact Assessment are the following (under the review):

  • Going beyond the health implications of the COVID-19 crisis, this socioeconomic impact assessment aims to capture and provide data and analysis of the wide-ranging impacts to date of the COVID-19 pandemic on Pacific countries and people, as well as prospects for the coming months;
  • The assessment will map the impact on Pacific peoples’ economic livelihood opportunities in all areas (urban, rural, remote), with a particular focus on vulnerable groups and project macroeconomic costs of the short and long-term impacts of the COVID -19 at the regional and national levels, using different scenarios;
  • The assessment will provide a deeper understanding of the integrated dimension of key challenges and interlinkages across multiple SDGs and propose recommendations for intersectoral policies and  strategies to mitigate the impacts of the epidemic; and
  • This socioeconomic impact assessment will provide data and analysis of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on access to essential services, including health care, education, social assistance and others.
