Antecedentes

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

To support member states in implementing the 2030 Agenda, UN Women’s Flagship Programme Initiative Making Every Woman and Girl Count (Women Count) aims to affect a radical shift in the production, availability, accessibility and use of quality data and statistics on key aspects of gender equality and women’s empowerment. Women Count, delivered significant results in scaling up work on gender statistics availability, accessibility, and use during Phase I of its implementation. Phase II of Women Count (2022-2025), a multi-year and multi-country programme of work, is the key UN Women programmatic tool to support Member States to strengthen the mainstreaming of gender perspectives in statistics and to monitor the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through three interlinked areas of work:

  • Building a supportive policy and institutional environment for the localization and effective monitoring of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs);
  • Increasing the quality, comparability and regularity of gender statistics to address national data gaps and meet reporting commitments under the SDGs; and
  • Ensuring that gender statistics are accessible to users in governments, civil society, academia and the private sector, to strengthen adequate demand for their production.

Under the supervision of the Regional Gender and Statistics Specialist, Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific (ROAP), and advised by the Manager, Statistics leadership, governance and use at SPC, the Statistics Specialist consultant will support the implementation of the Women Count, Phase II, in the Pacific region. This includes providing coordination and technical support for the implementation and analysis of official surveys, conducting analysis of microdata, big data and other data sources, managing the production of statistical publications, and promoting the use of data for decision and policymaking in Pacific countries. Given that liaison with SPC and data analysis are key functions of the Statistics Specialist, the incumbent will be based in SPC’s headquarters in New Caledonia.
