UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.
UN Women Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific is implementing the Regional Programme “Improving Women’s Human Rights in Southeast Asia“ covering eight countries: Cambodia, Indonesia, the Lao People's Democratic Republic (Lao PDR), Myanmar, the Philippines, Thailand, Timor-Leste and Viet Nam. The Programme focuses on knowledge generation and exchange, stock taking and priority setting for advancing the implementation of CEDAW in the region. Supported by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), the programme implementation will continue until mid 2016. In particular the programme will pay greater attention to:
UN Women is also implementing another CIDA funded regional project entitled “Regional Mechanisms to Protect the Human Rights of Women and Girls in Southeast Asia” from 2011 to March 2014. The Project aims to support the newly established ASEAN human rights bodies – AICHR and ACWC – in promoting the rights of women and children among ASEAN member states and facilitating the realization of gender equality and women’s human rights in the region as per the commitments to CEDAW, CRC and other international human rights instruments. The Project will focus on capacity development of AICHR, ACWC, their secretariats and civil society networks and organizations, particularly the regional network of gender advocates, to contribute towards an effective AICHR and ACWC that uses their mandate to the full extent possible to promote and protect women’s and girl’s human rights in the region. Long term outcome: Women's and girl’s rights are better protected in ASEAN member countries
Immediate Outcomes of the Project:
The Programme Specialist will support the Regional Programme Manager in the implementation of these two Programmes in accordance with the approved workplans.
