Antecedentes

UN Women (UNW) is grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security. Placing women’s rights at the center of all its efforts, the UN WOMEN will lead and coordinate United Nations system efforts to ensure that commitments on gender equality and gender mainstreaming translate into action throughout the world. It will provide strong and coherent leadership in support of Member States’ priorities and efforts, building effective partnerships with civil society and other relevant actors.

In Kenya, the UN Women Country Programme contributes to the development objectives of Kenya’s blue print, the Vision 2030 and is aligned to the United Nations Development Assistance Frameworks (UNDAF) of 2009-2014 and the upcoming UNDAF of 2014-2018, as well as UN Women Global Strategic Plan. The Kenya Country Programme -Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment Gains Consolidated' - aims to achieve the following results: (i) increased women’s leadership and participation in governance; (ii) strengthened women’s economic empowerment; (iii) increased protection of women & access to justice for women; and (iv) strengthened women’s leadership in peace building and humanitarian response.

It is in this context that UN Women in Kenya is seeking to recruit a consultant to provide technical assistance in within the communications unit from January to July 2016.

Deberes y responsabilidades

Summary of Key Functions:

  • Develop communication plan 2016 and provide monthly update of its implementation;
  • Liaise and contact media houses to maintain UN Women media/press relations;
  • Identify storylines for publications and draft substantive articles contributing to debates on key development issues;
  • Produce monthly programme stories and information materials for e-newsletter;
  • Prepare adhoc communication materials (brochures, fact sheets, briefs and stories) and publications as may be directed by the supervisor;
  • Contact with printers and other suppliers to ensure production and ensure publications dissemination;
  • Organize communication needs of the International Women’s Day (IWD) and other UN Women special events and campaigns;
  • Manage the website and social media accounts in line with relevant corporate policies;
  • Support facilitation of knowledge building and management;
  • Provide monthly status and progress report.

Expected Deliverables:

  • Communication plan 2016 and monthly update of its implementation;
  • Evidence of media houses contacted;
  • Number of storylines identified and articles produced;
  • Number of monthly programme stories and information materials produced for e-newsletter;
  • Communication materials (brochures, fact sheets, briefs and stories) and publications developed;
  • Reports on support provided on UN Women special events and campaigns;
  • Weekly or monthly updates on the status of the website and social media accounts;
  • Monthly progress reports.

Habilidades y experiencia requeridas

Education:

  • Master’s degree (or equivalent) in communications, journalism, public relations, international relations or a related field.

Experience:

  • At least 3 years of experience in communications at the national or international level, including   experience in media relations;
  • Experience in on-line outreach and multimedia an asset;
  • Experience in web management; design soft wares; photography;
  • Experience working in large development agency also pertinent;
  • Familiarity with gender issues;
  • Familiarity with UN Women and UN system is an asset.

Language Requirements:

  • Fluency in English is required;
  • Working knowledge of another UN official language an asset.
