Antecedentes

The Regional Gender Team, based in the UNDP Istanbul Regional Hub (IRH), supports UNDP Country Offices in the Europe and Central Asia region with a range of advisory services to advance gender equality and women’s empowerment. These include the design and development of programmes and strategic initiatives, promoting engagement with women’s organizations and other civil society partners, and strengthening innovative approaches, peer learning and strategic partnerships within and outside the region. It also supports the design and implementation of regional and sub-regional initiatives to promote gender equality and women’s empowerment and meet the objectives of the UNDP global Gender Equality Strategy (2014-2017).

A key area of the work is to track and present the results achieved by UNDP programmes and initiatives in the region in advancing gender equality and women’s empowerment. The intern will ensure their dissemination within UNDP and internal learning platforms, as well as on social media and other channels using bold innovative and creative approaches to generate public interest and wider attention. 

Deberes y responsabilidades

The intern will work closely with the programme specialist in the Regional Gender Team under the overall supervision of the Regional Team Leader.

Research, documentation and knowledge management:

  • Conduct research on gender equality issues in the region to contribute to the work of IRH; 
  • Conduct desk reviews, interviews with country office staff and stakeholders to develop;  
  • Contribute to training and learning materials on gender mainstreaming (e.g., presentations, webinars, background briefs); 
  • Assist in the preparation of other written materials (e.g., briefing notes and talking points, fast facts and results pagers).

Meeting organization:

  • Support the organization of internal and external regional meetings and events involving UNDP staff and external gender equality practitioners (e.g., conferences, brown bag events, launch events for publications).

Other activities: 

  • Provide general support to the work of the Gender Team (e.g., participate in meetings and provide reports and minutes, assist with reporting requirements).

  • Attention to details;
  • Strong communications skills, especially in various forms of online communications and social media.

Habilidades y experiencia requeridas

Education: 

  • Currently enrolled in a graduate–level degree programme (master’s or higher degree) in gender studies, human rights, international relations, social sciences, ethnology, public policy or related disciplines. 

Experience:

  • Theoretical and practical knowledge of gender equality and women’s empowerment  development programming is an advantage; 
  • Demonstrated interest in women’s empowerment and gender equality;
  • Experience in research on gender equality issues is considered an asset; 
  • Excellent computer literacy (Word, Excel, ppt).

Language:

  • Proficiency in English, with excellent writing, research and analytical skills is a must;
  • Knowledge of Russian would be an advantage.

Conditions of Service

  • UNDP internship programme does not provide a salary or remuneration for the internship;
  • All the expenses connected with the internship will be borne by the intern, sponsoring Government or institution;
  • UNDP accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness or death incurred during the internship;
  • The intern is responsible for obtaining necessary visas and arranging travel to and from the duty station where the internship will be performed;
  • Interns are not eligible to apply for, or be appointed to, any post in UNDP during the period of the internship or for six months immediately following the expiration date of internship;
  • The intern must provide proof of enrollment in health insurance plan;
  • Interns are not staff members and may not represent UNDP in any official capacity.

Only those students who will return to their studies upon completion of their internship assignments are eligible.
Subsequent Employment

The purpose of the Internship Programme is not to lead to further employment with UNDP but to complement an intern’s studies. 
Therefore, there should be no expectation of employment at the end of an internship.
It is important to note that interns are responsible to arrange for their own visa and residence documents, and need to plan for these well in advance.
