Antecedentes

UN Women Background

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security. Placing women's rights at the center of all its efforts, the UN Women leads and coordinates the United Nations system efforts to ensure that commitments on gender equality and gender mainstreaming translate into action throughout the world. 

Unit/ Project Background

UN Women in FYR Macedonia is supporting national stakeholders to advance the implementation of national and international commitments to gender equality. UN Women together with other UN agencies and international partners has been providing technical assistance to the government and civil society organization in advancing the implementation of the Strategies for Gender Equality and Gender Responsive Budgeting, the Strategy for Prevention and Protection from Domestic Violence, the National Action Plan on UN Security Council Resolution 1325 and other sector strategies. In line with its mandate, UN Women is leading and coordinating the UN Country Team on gender equality, it chairs the UN Partnership Assistance Framework Results Group on Gender Equality and is supporting the UN to mainstream gender perspective in the SDG localization agenda.

UN Women is also leading activities to mark international advocacy days, such as the 8th of March (International Women’s Days, anniversary of UNSCR 1325 on Women, Peace and Security (October 31) and 16 Days of Activism to end Violence against Women).

Deberes y responsabilidades

Under direct supervision of the Head of Office, the intern supports the implementation of the UN Women annual work plan for 2017 and in particular the tasks related to strategic planning and advocacy for women’s rights and gender equality.

The intern will support the office programme staff in three main areas and undertake the following tasks:

Strategic planning and development of new UN Women Strategic Note 2017-2021

  • Carry out desk review and assessment of the status of gender equality in the country (based on latest statistical data, tailored analysis and assessment and local vs global trends and indexes);
  • Review existing UN strategic documents, such as Partnership for Sustainable Development (2016-2020) and Gender Scorecard on the PSD, as well as UN Agencies country programmes and strategic plans;
  • Support the head of office and the programme team in conducing consultations on the new UN Women strategic note;
  • Support the Head of office and the programme team in developing the FYR Macedonia sections of UN Women Strategic Note for Europe and Central Asia (ECA);
  • Review the feedback and comments from the ECA Regional office and make revisions to the draft of the SN;
  • Participate in the last round of consultations with stakeholders.

Coordination, development of Joint Programming on gender and SDG localization

  • Support the UN Women Head of Office in monitoring the implementation of the PSD annual workplan;
  • Support the PSD Results group on gender equality in developing Joint programme on gender equality;
  • Support the UN Women head of office and UN focal points in advising national counterparts on mainstreaming gender equality in the country Strategy for Sustainable Development.

Advocacy and support to resource mobilization for gender equality

  • Support the UN Women communication specialist and the office team in producing advocacy materials and organizing advocacy and outreach activities;
  • Review the relevant documents, strategies of different donors, international/regional organizations to feed in the resource mobilization strategy and efforts of the programme office.

Education:

  • The intern must have studies in social science, political studies, development studies, politics, gender/women studies, journalism, communication studies or other similar subject at the university level.
  • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.

Language:

  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral) in English are required; knowledge of any local language (Macedonian/Albanian/Serbian) is an asset.

Interns are not financially remunerated by UN Women.

Application Information:

  • UN Women will only be able to respond to those applications in which there is further interes;
  • Selected applicants must provide the internship application, two letters of recommendation, proof of health insurance and school enrollment, passport, and visa (if applicable).

Note:

In July 2010, the United Nations General Assembly created UN Women, the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women. The creation of UN Women came about as part of the UN reform agenda, bringing together resources and mandates for greater impact. It merges and builds on the important work of four previously distinct parts of the UN system (DAW, OSAGI, INSTRAW and UNIFEM), which focused exclusively on gender equality and women's empowerment

UN Women Internship Policy:

Applicants to the United Nations internship programme must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:

  •  Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
  •  Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent);
  •  Have graduated with a university degree (as (b) above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within one year.

UN Women internship programme does not provide a salary or remuneration for the internship;

  • All the expenses connected with the internship will be borne by the intern, sponsoring Government or institution;
  • UN Women accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness or death incurred during the internship;
  • The intern is responsible for obtaining necessary visas and arranging travel to and from the duty station where the internship will be performed;
  • Interns are not eligible to apply for, or be appointed to, any post in UN WOMEN during the period of the internship or for six months immediately following the expiration date of internship;
  • The intern must provide proof of enrollment in a health insurance plan, proof of school enrollment, a scanned copy of his/her passport, two letters of recommendation, and application.
