UNDP’s Energy and Climate Change Mitigation Team in the Bureau for Polic and Programme Support works towards ensuring coherency in UNDP policy as well as operational orientation in energy and climate mitigation at the national, regional and global levels and oversees a large portfolio of projects, conducts evidence-based analysis, and provides technical support to countries.  UNDP energy activities are aligned with SDG7 and focus on energy access, energy efficiency, and renewable energy.  The Sustainable Energy Programme provides leadership in orienting UNDP efforts to mainstream energy access considerations into national development strategies, expand financing options for energy access, and developing local capacity for decentralized energy service delivery for the poor.  The SEP team coordinates UNDP’s energy activities and works toward ensuring coherency in UNDP policy tools and operational activities in energy at the national, regional and global levels.

Under the supervision of the Head of Energy, UNDP conducts an in-depth portfolio analysis of all UNDP energy/climate mitigation projects.  Comprehensive portfolio reviews have already been done and the last comprehensive review included financial information until December 2016.  The review also includes more detailed analysis on projects in energy access, energy efficiency, renewable energy, sustainable cities and transport. In this next round of work, the intern will be responsible for doing research, and updating the dataset and existing analysis to include.  This work will feed into UNDP’s infographics report for 2017 which features financial information of projects and will expand to feature stories, regional profiles and country profiles of different energy projects.  The Intern will also work with the energy and climate mitigation team to help put together a list of successful UNDP energy case studies.

Currently, the GEF technical advisors and energy specialists support development and implementation of close to 260 sustainable energy projects (excluding small projects) in over 110 countries representing a portfolio of around US$1 billion in grant financing mainly from the GEF and leveraging close to US$6 billion in co-financing from the public and private sectors. Over the past 20 years, UNDP has mobilized around US$2 billion in grant financing for sustainable energy projects in addition to 4,000 community-level small grant projects, totaling more than US$130 million in grant financing. This portfolio also includes a growing number of sustainable cities and transport initiatives, as well as energy-related interventions in the context of fragile states and countries in conflict and crisis.
