Antecedentes

The UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security. Placing women’s rights at the centre of all its efforts, the UN Women will lead and coordinate United Nations system efforts to ensure that commitments on gender equality and gender mainstreaming translate into action throughout the world. It will provide strong and coherent leadership in support of Member States’ priorities and efforts, building effective partnerships with civil society and other relevant actors.

The Inter-Agency Coordination Specialist is a member of the UN System Coordination Division’s team part of the Strategic Partnerships, Coordination and Intergovernmental Bureau of UN Women. The Coordination Division is responsible for implementing UN Women’s Coordination Strategy as it pertains to (1) enhanced UN system coherence and mobilization of joint action (2) increased system-wide gender mainstreaming (3) system-wide application of accountability frameworks on gender equality and the empowerment of women (4) improvement in gender balance and the status of women in the UN system.

Under the guidance and supervision of the Director, UN System Coordination Division, the Inger-Agency Coordination Specialist will contribute to and support gender mainstreaming in the UN system, including through preparation of reports and knowledge products and providing substantive and organization support to the Inter-Agency Network on Women and Gender Equality (IANGWE) and its task forces. He/she also contributes substantively to the work on gender parity, as well as the Coordination Division's contribution to the implementation of the sustainable development goals (SDGs).  

Deberes y responsabilidades

Provide technical contributions to gender mainstreaming across the UN System:

  • Provide technical inputs to the preparation of various written reports, documents and communications, e.g. draft reports or sessions of analytical reports, studies, background papers, parliamentary documents, briefings, and correspondence;
  • Provide substantive technical support in the reporting, monitoring and analysis of gender mainstreaming in the UN system;
  • Provide technical support in the planning, organizing and servicing of technical and ad hoc expert group meetings, draft reports and prepare summaries of meetings;
  • Represent the Division at international and other meetings, organize/ participate in working groups, meetings, conferences, and consultations with other UN entities and partners, including Member States, regional organizations and NGOs, as delegated.

Provide technical contrpbutions to strengthening gender parity across the UN System:

  • Provide technical support to policy development and implementation, monitoring and reporting, research and knowledge management on gender parity in the UN system;
  • Provide inputs to the development of advice on policies and procedures to improve the status of women in the UN System through the development of common policies, strategies, and mechanisms for managerial accountability;
  • Oversee quantitative and qualitative monitoring of progress made by the organizations of the UN System in improving the status of women, including detailed analysis of statistics and implementation of specific measures governing the appointment, promotion and retention of women, work life fit and other gender related policies.

Provide substantive and organizational support to the Inter-agency Network on Women and Gender Equality (IANWGE):

  • Provide substantive and organizational support to the IANWGE and its inter-sessional task forces and the working group, by planning and overseeing logistical arrangements for meetings and preparing background papers on best practices and proposals for strengthening inter-agency collaboration;
  • Draft opening statements and notes, as required;
  • Provide organizational assistance to the Secretary of the Meetings by drafting reports of the meeting and related correspondence;
  • Strengthen partnerships and cooperation with other entities of the UN Common System through regular contact, exchange ideas, review progress in implementation of inter-agency projects and promote initiative for increased collaboration.

Participate in knowledge management and capacity building efforts:

  • Provide technical contributions to the development of instruments and mechanisms for linking policy makers and practitioners to state of the art knowledge on gender mainstreaming, including in the context of the 2030 Agenda;
  • Provide technical contributions to the conceptualization and development of knowledge platforms and products.

Habilidades y experiencia requeridas

Education:

  • Master’s degree (or equivalent) in one or more of the following disciplines: gender issues, law, and social sciences.

Experience:

  • Minimum five years of progressively responsible experience working on human rights, gender equality and women’s empowerment issues;
  • Demonstrated engagement with gender issues including research, writing and data compilation, and analysis of relevance to broad accountability frameworks and mechanisms;
  • Experience in the UN Common System is desirable.

Languages:

  • Fluency in English is required;
  • Knowledge of the other UN official working language is desirable.

The creation of UN Women came about as part of the UN reform agenda, bringing together resources and mandates for greater impact. It merges and builds on the important work of four previously distinct parts of the UN system (DAW, OSAGI, INSTRAW and UNIFEM), which focused exclusively on gender equality and women's empowerment.
