Antecedentes

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security. Placing women’s rights at the center of all its efforts, UN Women will lead and coordinate United Nations system efforts to ensure that commitments on gender equality and gender mainstreaming translate into action throughout the world. It will provide strong and coherent leadership in support of Member States’ priorities and efforts, building effective partnerships with civil society and other relevant actors.

UN Women Bangladesh Country Office has planned for several events of strategic importance to UN Women’s mandate during the last quarter of 2017 and early 2018, including 16 days of Activism Against Gender-based Violence, policy dialogues on Women and Migration, launching of a number of studies, and the preparation for Commission on the Status of WomenUN Women  has also established a Women, Peace and Security Programme focused on increasing women’s participation and roles in peace and security issues. Additionally, the longstanding Violence Against Women Programme will further expand the areas of work. UN Women Bangladesh is therefore seeking a Strategic Communications Consultant that will support UN Women enhance its visibility and communicate its policy and behavior change messages effectively around through these events and progrmames.

The Consultant will work under the overall guidance of the Country Representative and direct supervision of the Programme Specialist; and in close collaboration with the programme teams,at the communication team of UN Women Regional Office for Asia-Pacific and Headquarters.

Deberes y responsabilidades

The consultant will be responsible to:

  • Implement the UN Women's Communication strategy and plans. This includesRollout of campaign plan for Building Capacity of Partners to End Violence against Women project. 
    1. Support planning & preparation for the annual campaign on 16 Days of Activism against Gender-based Violence;
    2. Support programme teams to develop and implement communication plans and ensure external audience outreach, specifically media for the following events – policy dialogue on ‘Women and Migration’; launching event of Gender Responsive Budgeting project; and event on ‘Inclusive, equitable local development’ project;
    3. Support the Women, Peace and Security team to prepare and implement a campaign plan in order to enahance the visibility of the programme;
    4. Develop and implement an overall social media plan for October 2017 to January 2018 to feature messages from abovementioned programmes and events;
    5. Build the capacity of UN Women staff to plan, implement and monitor effective  communications products (i.e. webstories, social media postings, short videos, op-eds, etc.);
  • Work with programme teams and develop substantial content for the UN Women Bangladesh Country website(http://bangladesh.unwomen.org).

Duration of the assignment

The total duration of the contract assignment will be 70 working days within a period from 15 October 2017 or date of signing the agreement to 31 March 2018.

Deliverables

  • Press releases and post campaign/event media coverage summary reports
  • Communication and campaign plan for Women, Peace and Security Programme
  • One one-day training on communications for UN WOMEN staff
  • Social media plan for October 2017- January 2018 developed and implemented.
  • At least 5 media/web articles and opeds targeting one for each external event
  • Renewed contents of BCO website

Habilidades y experiencia requeridas

Education:

  • Master’s Degree or equivalent in journalism or communications;
  • or Master’s degree with suitable qualifications (i.e. diploma, professional courses) in communications with strong track records.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 5 (Five years) of communications experience preferably in a national/ international setting;
  • Experience developing, implementing and monitoring communication strategies for national or international organizations involved with gender equality and/or international development
  • Demonstrated ability to build capacity for communications with colleagues and partners (civil society and government)
  • Proficient in identifying strategic objectives and audiences and devising communications and social media strategies, including in multi-media formats, that engage, inform and motivate.

Language

  • Excellent command of English and Bangla
