Antecedentes

UN Women Background:

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

Unit/ Project Background:

The intern will be based in UN WOMEN´s Regional Office in Cairo, Egypt. The regional office provides guidance and support to UN WOMEN´s country offices in Palestine, Jordan, Egypt, Iraq and Morocco (covering Tunisia and Algeria), as well as the implementation of activities in Libya, Yemen and the Syria response strategy – including Lebanon.

The Regional Office has an oversight function for all regional programming, provides policy advice to country offices and counterparts, and provides coordination on gender equality in the UN system and with stakeholders. The Regional Office´s portfolio includes working on addressing root causes of inequalities, including looking at masculinities, women´s human rights in Islam; a regional programme on political participation and economic empowerment; a Syria response programme, and women´s peace and security.

In2018, UN Women ROAS will develop a comprehensive partnerships strategy with the aim of expanding the partnership base to further the mandate and function of UN Women in the Arab States region.

Deberes y responsabilidades

Under the supervision of the Coordination Specialist, the intern support the elaboration of a strategic approach to partnerships, through the performance of the below responsibilities.

The intern will have the following responsibilities:

  • Map current and past partners of UN Women Regional Office, Country Offices and Programme Presences in the Arab States region, including implementing partners, national authorities and regional inter-governmental organisations, civil society, private sector, members States and other partners, including the nature and scope of the respective partnerships;
  • Research and prepare draft profiles on prominent private sector entities in the Arab States region that may be relevant to ROAS’s strategic approach to partnerships, with a focus on corporations that are based in the Arab States region, and that are committed to corporate social responsibility, sustainable development, the UN Global Compact (and other relevant UN platforms for private sector engagement) and/or the Women’s Empowerment Principles;
  • Research and draft donor profiles on key donors to UN Women in the Arab States and globally;
  • Research and draft profiles on key civil society organisations active in gender equality and women’s empowerment in the Arab States;
  • Research and draft profiles on philanthropic foundations and High-Net Worth Individuals in the region with a demonstrated commitment to the advancement of gender equality and women’s empowerment, human rights, youth empowerment, sustainable development etc.;
  • Research and draft operational overviews of sovereign development funds in the Arab States region;
  • Other related tasks as may be assigned by the supervisor.

Learning Objectives:

  • The intern will have gained an understanding of the strategic development of UN WOMEN in the Arab States region, particularly strategic partnerships;
  • The intern will be familiar with the work of UN WOMEN in the Arab states region and will be able to draft strategic planning and coordination support documents;
  • The intern will have a better understanding of UN coordination functions and UN Women´s knowledge hub function;
  • The intern will be able to participate in meetings and key events as scheduled.

Habilidades y experiencia requeridas

Education:

  • The intern must have studies in political science, human rights, international development, gender studies, or other similar subject at the university level.
  • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.

Language:

  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral) in English are required; working knowledge of French or Arabic an advantage.

Interns are not financially remunerated by UN Women.

Application Information:

  • UN Women will only be able to respond to those applications in which there is further interest.
  • Selected applicants must provide the internship application, two letters of recommendation, proof of health insurance and school enrollment, passport, and visa (if applicable).

Applicants should meet one of the following requirements:

  • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
  • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent) or;
  • Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within one year.

UN Women Internship Policy:

  • UN Women internship programme does not provide a salary or remuneration for the internship;
  • Interns are not financially remunerated by UN Women;
  • All the expenses connected with the internship will be borne by the intern, sponsoring Government or institution;
  • UN Women accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness or death incurred during the internship;
  • The intern is responsible for obtaining necessary visas and arranging travel to and from the duty station where the internship will be performed;
  • Interns are not eligible to apply for, or be appointed to, any post in UN WOMEN during the period of the internship.

In July 2010, the United Nations General Assembly created UN Women, the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women. The creation of UN Women came about as part of the UN reform agenda, bringing together resources and mandates for greater impact. It merges and builds on the important work of four previously distinct parts of the UN system (DAW, OSAGI, INSTRAW and UNIFEM), which focused exclusively on gender equality and women's empowerment.
