Antecedentes

UNDP has progressively supported the Albanian Government to improve the coverage and management effectiveness of Albania’s network of marine and coastal protected areas. Over years significant achievements are marked in the Vlora region by establishing clear institutional and legal framework for Marine and Coastal Protected Areas (MCPAs) designation and management. Among others, UNDP project, in close collaboration with Vlora Protected Areas Administration, is focus on intensifying and strengthening management activities for Karaburuni-Sazani Marine Protected Area (MPA), with due attentive paid on the improvement of education, information and communication means and partners that allow delivery of main conservation messages.

For this purpose, an information and visitor center is established since late 2016 and running on a daily bases in Rradhima site, providing information and all available branding tools for the MPA K-S ecosystem values, attractive tourists options and enabling a range of nature based tourism activities.

Capacity-building for marine environmental monitoring with focus on MPA Karaburun - Sazani is a permanent concern of the environment authorities, as well as, for the UNDP MPA programme; therefore, the project has planned to commit all local resources to fill the distinct lack of such skills and knowhow, for monitoring of biotic parameters - in the public bodies responsible for MPA and related disciplines in Vlora region. A specific focus is given to engage prominent and committed university students, in the monitoring of key indicators of marine ecosystem health, species condition, number and location, tourism and eco-tourism aspects, etc.

Deberes y responsabilidades

  • Update and record tour operators and activities data in the area using office programmes

  • Monitoring, supervisory and survey of diving activities in Marine Park in collaboration with dive tour operators, collect and process diving data on diving points;

  • Completion of tourism questionnaires of MPA Karaburun-Sazan, their data process and graphic presentation;

  • During the summer season, monitoring visitors and collect number of tourists inside MPA Karaburun-Sazan; Preparation of graphic presentation for the data collection;

  • Design of touristic attractions list and its periodic updating. Special focus on Caves Inventory in National Marine Park Karaburun-Sazan;

  • Prepare, in collaboration with Vlora Public University and Regional Directorate of National Culture, terrestrial and underwater archeological ruins database in the Protected Areas;

  • Support and accompany students/pupils groups during education and awareness activities as well as assist visitors and experts during their visit in the area;

  • Provide suggestions and effective proposals to improve marine parkinfrastructure that aim to facilitate and help visitors;

  • Update information on Protected Areas Administration social media pages, with a special focus on updating national marine park Karaburun-Sazani webpage;

  • Record keeping and filling of Visitor Center Register and other relevant documents in use;
  • Preparing, drafting and formatting documents and presentations as required;
  • Providing a day-to-day support to the activities of the office;

  • Complete other duties as requested.

At the end of the internship, the Intern shall deliver as in the following:

  • His/her internship experience story, to be published on the project and PA administration websites

  • An Evaluation Form with his/her recommendations on how to improve upcoming internships experiences.

Habilidades y experiencia requeridas

Education/Academic Background/other

Applicants to the UNDP internship programme must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements: a) be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); b) be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent); or c) have graduated with a university degree (as defined in (a) and (b) above) in a relevant discipline (International relations, Law, Political Sciences, Economy or other relevant field);

  • Relevant displince is Tourism, Business Administration or relevant field
  • Strong interest in working in environment and biodiversity, particularly with marine and coastal protected areas projects;
  • Internet communication and searching skills
  • Social media skills (Twitter/Facebook/ ect.)
  • Good English language skills. Ability in another European language is an asset (Italian, French ect).
  • Capacity on GIS will be a strong asset.

    Kindly note that selected intern will be required the following:

    - a Medical Certificate of Good Health from a recognized physician. If the intern is expected to travel outside the country of their residence, other than to Europe and North America, the physician must indicate whether he/she is fit to travel and   has had the required inoculations for the country or countries to which the intern is to travel; (Can be obtained from a Family Center (State one), free of charge)

    - proof of medical insurance valid for the location(s) in which the internship will be carried out;

    Financial Issues:
    Internships within the UN system are unpaid and subject to conditions the applicant must get familiar with prior to signing his/her internship agreement.
    The costs associated with the internship must be borne by the nominating institution, related institution or government, which may provide the required financial assistance to its students; or by the student, who will have to obtain financing for subsistence and make his or her own arrangements for travel, accommodation etc.

    UNDP only accepts interns for a minimum of 6 weeks and a maximum of 6 months.
    UNDP accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness or death incurred during the internship.
    Interns are not staff members and may not represent UNDP in any official capacity.
    It is important to note that interns are responsible to arrange for their own visa and residence documents, and need to plan for these well in advance.

    Subsequent Employment:
    The purpose of the Internship Programme is not to lead to further employment with UNDP but to complement an intern’s studies. 
    Therefore, there should be no expectation of employment at the end of an internship.
