UN Women Background:

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

Unit Background:

UN Women envisions a world where all women and girls live a life free from violence in private and public spaces. UN Women contributes to this vision through supporting comprehensive and human rights-based approaches to prevent and respond to violence against women and girls (VAWG), which includes adoption of laws and policies, collection of data, measures to address the root causes of VAWG, promote respectful relationships, gender equality and create safe cities and public spaces. UN-Women also enhances the knowledge of survivors and their access to quality essential services.

Under the Ending Violence Against Women (EVAW) section UN Women’s Global Flagship Initiative “Safe Cities and Safe Public Spaces” aims to prevent and respond to SVAWG in public spaces in 35 participating cities. In 2013, the United Nations Commission for the Status of Women (CSW57) identified various forms of sexual violence against women and girls (SVAWG) in public spaces as a distinct area of concern, and called on governments to prevent it. The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development has set “the elimination of all forms of violence against all women and girls in public and private spheres” as one of its specific goals (Target 5.2). In 2016, the New Urban Agenda commits to promote a safe, healthy, inclusive, and secure environment in cities and human settlements for all to live, work, and participate in urban life without fear of violence and intimidation.

The Safe Cities and Safe Public Spaces Global Flagship Initiative is currently developing a community of practice which will serve as a learning and exchange platform on Safe Public Spaces for UN Women staff and local and global programme partners who are implementing policy and programmes to prevent sexual violence and other forms of violence against women in public spaces. This platform will provide the latest information (practices, tools, lessons learned) from participating cities in the global FPI , in addition to other safe public spaces’ initiatives. It will include a compendium of practices, several media for interactivity among multi sectoral stakeholders, and periodic webinars and discussion boards. The intern will contribute to the coordination, analysis, compilation of knowledge and opportunities in these areas of work.

The Safe Cities and Safe Public Spaces initiative is seeking an intern to support the global team. The intern will be working under the direct supervision of the EVAW Technical Specialist.
