The Resident Coordinator System encompasses all organizations of the United Nations that have operational activities in the country. As the designated Representative of the UN Secretary-General and leader of the UN Country Team (UNCT), the UN Resident Coordinator (UNRC), in consultation with the UNCT, assumes overall responsibility and coordination of the developmental activities of the UN carried out at country level. The UNCT is composed of representatives of the UN funds and programmes, specialized agencies and non-resident UN agencies. The UNCT in Mongolia has various working structures to ensure a coordinated interagency action in the country, and implement joint activities under the leadership of the RC.

The UN RCO Intern under the overall supervision of the RC, direct supervision of the UN Coordination Specialist, and in close cooperation with the UN Agencies, will provide assistance to the execution of the services in the UN RCO.

This internship opportunity does not lead to further employment with UNDP. Its goal is to offer the intern the opportunity to learn, gather experiences and complement his/her studies.

Therefore, there should be no expectation of employment at the end of the internship. 

Background and Context

The purpose of the Internship is to provide students and recent graduates from diverse academic backgrounds exposure to sustainable development issues and a first-hand experience of the day-to-day working environment of UN in Mongolia.

An intern will be deployed and assigned to the UN Resident Coordinator’s Office (RCO) to provide a support in the UN coordination and communications functions. The expected outputs of his/her assignment will be contributing to increasing visibility of the work of UN in Mongolia, strengthening UN inter-agency coordination and communications.

Deberes y responsabilidades

Scope of Assignment

Under the guidance and direct supervision of the Coordination Specialist, the Intern will undertake his/her assigned tasks indicated in the below:

  • Support RCO in organizing up-coming advocacy events. Liaise with meeting participants and organizers on logistical matters of joint UN events, meetings, seminars and workshops;
  • Assist the RCO staff in gathering information relevant to the implementation of the United Nations Development Assistance Framework 2017-2021 (UNDAF);
  • Support the office in updating the UNCT public website to ensure it effectively functions as an outreach advocacy tool in line with the UN repositioning in the country and the UNDAF;
  • Monitor and compile information on political and economic news in Mongolia;
  • Monitor and update news through social media via Twitter and Facebook;
  • Analyze the website and social media impact;
  • Produce the graphic design of brochures, presentations, social media content and other documentation;
  • Collect background information and contribute to the preparation of reports;
  • Provide other support and assistance, including preparation of documents, proof-reading corresponding and research work;
  • Support maintaining the office’s mailing list always updated; and
  • Perform other clerical tasks as required.

Habilidades y experiencia requeridas


·         Bachelor’s* or Master’s degree in international relations, sustainable development, political science, environment or related field; either obtained or in progress;

  • Good writing and communication skills: ability to draft clearly and concisely ideas and concepts in written and oral form;

·         Familiarity with the concept of sustainable development will be an asset;

·         Previous experience working with the organization of events, missions, seminars and conferences will be an asset;

·         Previous experience managing online content in website and social media platforms will be an asset;

·         Strong command of MS office package (including Excel, Word and PowerPoint);

·         Good command of graphic edition applications will be an asset (i.e. Illustrator, InDesign, Corel, Photoshop), and

·         Written and spoken proficiency in English and Mongolian.

In addition:

·         Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter;

·         Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Work Experience

Applicants are not required to have professional work experience to be eligible for the internship 

Eligibility requirements

Applicants to the UNDP internship programme must at the time of application meet one of the

following requirements:

(a)                  Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);

(b)                  Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent);

Have graduated with a university degree (as defined in (a) and (b) above) and, if selected, must start the internship within one-year of graduation.
