CORPORATE BACKGROUND:

UNDP works in about 170 countries and territories, helping to achieve the eradication of poverty, and the reduction of inequalities and exclusion. We help countries to develop policies, leadership skills, partnering abilities, institutional capabilities and build resilience in order to sustain development results.

UNDP is working to strengthen new frameworks for development, disaster risk reduction and climate change. We support countries' efforts to achieve the new Sustainable Development Goals, which will guide global development priorities through 2030. The key 2030 Agenda principle of leaving no one behind and stamping out inequality is at the core of everything we do.

UNDP focuses on helping countries build and share solutions in three main areas:

  • Sustainable development
  • Democratic governance and peacebuilding
  • Climate and disaster resilience

In all our activities, we encourage the protection of human rights and the empowerment of women, minorities and the poorest and most vulnerable.

INTERNSHIP OFFICE BACKGROUND:

All for 193 member states of the UN adopted the 2030 Agenda for sustainable development in 2015. The 2030 Agenda is a comprehensive plan of action for people, planet and prosperity. The plan of action is embodied in the 17 goals that are collectively referred to as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These 17 goals with 169 targets are expected to stimulate collective across the world in areas that are of critical importance for humanity and the planet.

Countries are taking steps to achieve the 17 SDGs. Lessons from the MDGs era (2001-2015) show that the global goals can only be fully achieved if they are “localized” or in other words translated into goals and actions that are relevant, applicable and attainable at the local level.  Similarly, much of the investments and efforts to achieve the SDGs should also take place at the local level and led by local authorities.

UNDP is supporting countries across the world to localize the SDGs. In the Asia-Pacific region, UNDP is supporting countries to establishing the policy and institutional framework essential for localizing and achieving the SDGs. UNDP is also leading efforts to establish multi-stakeholder partnerships to encourage other actors (such as private sector, academia, civil society etc..,) to contribute to achieving the SDGs and realize the ambition of Agenda 2030 in leaving no one behind.

UNDP’s Bangkok Regional Hub (BRH) provides advisory support to 24 UNDP country offices covering 36 countries in the Asia-Pacific region. The work on SDG localization is led by the local governance team, which supports countries to strengthen the overall enabling environment for SDG localization, including through stronger partnerships between different stakeholder to define and achieve local priorities. This approach has informed the development of tools for localizing SDGs – including the SDG Diagnostic tool, which brings together different local data sets to visualize local development and governance context, and support local prioritization and decision making processes. The tool is piloted in three countries, and will be expanded to other countries in the region and beyond.

BRH is also working with regional bodies such as ASEAN to localize SDGs. Towards this end, a joint symposium on localizing SDGs is planned in August in Siem Reap, Cambodia. BRH is seeking an intern to support with research and knowledge management leading up to the symposium, and support with follow-up activities.
