Antecedentes

The UN Women office in Ethiopia plays a dual role, representation to the African Union (AU) and United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) and representation to Ethiopia. In this regard, under its regional function, the Ethiopia country office engages with the AU and its various organs, the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) as well as the diplomatic community and in particular, delegations to the African Union.

Through the office, UN Women is able to provide technical support to member states and the AU in the adoption, implementation and monitoring of commitments on gender equality and women’s empowerment (GEWE) at the regional level, and in accordance with its mandate. Furthermore, the Ethiopia Country Office (ECO) will represent UN Women in the UN Liaison Team and facilitate the participation of UN Women Regional Directors for East and Southern Africa (ESAR), West and Central Africa (WCAR) and North Africa in the Regional Coordination Mechanism (RCM) to advance the GEWE agenda on the continent. 

Deberes y responsabilidades

Under the overall guidance of the Liaison Adviser and with close supervision from the Liaison Specialist, the UN volunteer shall perform the following key functions;

  1. Support the implementation of UN Women Ethiopia Country Office Annual Work Plan pertaining to regional level partnerships with the AU, UNECA, CSOs, diplomatic communities and UN Women regional and country offices
  2. Provide support to the documentation and sharing of good practices and dissemination of lessons learned in the implementation of AU led initiatives
  3. Participate in inter-agency coordination meetings, meetings with AU partners and prepare the notes for file and minutes
  4. Support the development of policy briefs and the coordination of dialogue forums on regional GEWE priorities
  5. Contribute to the Ethiopia Country Office regional level monthly, quarterly and annual reports
  6. Collect data for talking points, briefing notes and researches to be conducted on the regional liaison level activities of the office
  7. Provide logistical support and participate in events organized by UN Women Ethiopia Country Office and UN Women Regional Offices including the AU Pre- Summits and Summits as appropriate as well as UN Women internal staff retreats 

Key deliverables:

  • Background documents for policy and advocacy events including AU gender pre-summits, RCM annual session, side events around regional events prepared
  • Knowledge products and communication pieces developed
  • Briefs on advocacy events, interagency meetings and technical consultations developed and shared
  • Annual, quarterly and monthly results report of the Liaison function developed and shared
  • A final statement of achievements towards volunteerism for development during the assignment, such as reporting on the number of volunteers mobilized, activities participated in and capacities developed.

Habilidades y experiencia requeridas

Education

Master’s Degree or equivalent in Gender Studies, International Relations, Law, Social Sciences or development-related area of study.

Professional

At least 2 years of relevant experience in advocacy, program management, coordination, partnership building experience in gender equality, women’s rights and empowerment and social development related programs

Desirable:

  • Experience in multilateral or international organizations
  • Knowledge of French language
