In the area of parliament strengthening, the UNDP Pacific Office in Fiji has been working with Pacific parliaments over many years to strengthen their capacity. Currently, UNDP has a flagship project in Fiji and is also supporting national parliamentary work in numerous other Pacific Islands Countries and these include:

  • Fiji Parliament Support Project Phase 2
  • Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) funded regional parliamentary programme 2014 – 2017 for 15 PICs
  • New Zealand MFAT funded Pacific Parliamentary Effectiveness Initiative (PPEI) 2016 – 2018 focused on the 4 Pacific Island Legislatures of PNG, Tonga, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu and Cook Islands.

Japan Government funded Strengthening Legislatures in the Pacific Island Countries (SLIP) focused on the legislatures of Fiji, Samoa, Vanuatu, Solomon Islands, Republic of Marshall Islands (RMI) and Federated States of Micronesia (FSM)

The purpose of the internship is to provide meaningful support to the team. The Internship Programme operates on a non-remunerative basis.  Any in-country or regional travel required by the project will be paid for by the Project.

  • Assistance with profiling of Parliamentary Development projects
  • Assistance with the production of communications products such as videos
  • Assists in the management of the knowledge repository for the project
  • Perform other duties, as required.

The Intern will report to the Deputy Team Leader, Effective Governance as the primary supervisor, and will be required to work under the UN-PRAC Project. The Communications Associate will provide the second layer of supervision.

Qualified candidates must be:

  • Currently enrolled in a graduate-level degree programme as a full-time student in related media and or social science studies, development studies, political science/ public administration, communications or another specialization relevant to the Effective Governance.
  • Only those students who will return to their studies upon completion of their internship assignments are eligible
  •  Applicants available for a minimum of six weeks and up to six months are preferred.
  • Applicants must state their availability. Some flexibility will be allowed in the starting date and days worked per work.

Language requirements: Proficiency in English. Excellent report drafting skills.

Financial Arrangements:

  • UNDP does not pay for internships. The costs associated with the internship must be borne by the intern or his/her nominating institution, related institution or government, which may provide the required financial assistance to its students.  The intern will have to obtain financing for subsistence and make his/her own arrangements for travel, accommodation etc.
  • Further Career Opportunities: The purpose of internships is not to lead to further employment with UNDP but to complement an intern's studies. However, a number of interns, having completed their studies and met the necessary requirements, have gone on to further assignments with the UNDP or elsewhere in the United Nations system.

  • (The successful applicant will subsequently require health insurance coverage.) UNDP accepts no responsibility for the medical and life insurance of the intern or costs arising from accidents and illness incurred during an internship. As interns are not covered under any insurance, including MAIP, they should not travel to hazardous locations in the course of their internship with UNDP. Successful applicants for internship must show proof of valid medical and life/accident insurance for the duty station for which they will work. It must include adequate coverage in the event of an injury or illness during the internship which:
  • requires transportation to the Home Country or Country of Residence for further treatment; or
  • Results in death and requires preparation and return of the remains to the Home Country, or Country of Residence.
  • Incomplete applications will not be considered. Please make sure you have provided all requested materials.

The selection process will consist of interviews.

  • Candidates who are shortlisted for an interview must submit prior to the interview the following documents:
  • Official letter from the University confirming enrollment in a graduate-level degree programme (and graduation date).
  • Letter of endorsement from a senior faculty member who has directly supervised the student in the recent past and who is fully acquainted with the student's performance.
  • Copy of school transcript
  • A brief statement setting out the reasons why he/she is seeking an internship with UNDP and what is expected from the experience.
  • Before being offered an internship position, the selected candidate will have to provide the following additional documents: Medical Certificate of Good Health from a recognized physician.
