Antecedentes

The United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women), grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security. UN Women provides support to Member States’ efforts and priorities in meeting their gender equality goals and for building effective partnerships with civil society and other relevant actors.

The UN Women Uganda Country Office works with Government and partners to strengthen and increase participation of women in politics and leadership at national and Local Government levels. Uganda’s commitment to gender equality and the empowerment of women provides the basis for meaningful participation of women in electoral processes at all levels. The Electoral Commission therefore, has a duty to develop and implement systems that ensure that women and men of voting age enjoy their rights on a basis of equality of rights. To facilitate women’s ability to claim and exercise their political rights the Electoral Commission needs to adopt approaches that are based on a thorough understanding of the situation and positioning of women in Ugandan societies – their social roles, and power relations between men and women at family and community level. UN Women has supported the Electoral Commission to develop a gender strategy to guide mainstreaming of gender in electoral processes and is seeking the services of a consultant editor to edit the draft gender strategy.
