Background

 UN Women Background:

 UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

 Unit/ Project Background:

 UN Women envisions a world where all women and girls live a life free from violence in private and public spaces. UN Women contributes to this vision through supporting comprehensive and human rights-based approaches to prevent and respond to violence against women and girls (VAWG), which includes adoption of laws and policies, collection of data, measures to address the root causes of VAWG, promote respectful relationships, gender equality and create safe cities and public spaces. UN-Women also enhances the knowledge of survivors and their access to quality essential services.

The Ending Violence Against Women (EVAW) section is seeking 2 interns to support the institutional change portfolio. The interns will be working under the direct supervision of the Policy Specialist on Institutional Change.?

Description of Responsibilities

The UN Women EVAW team is working with several partners in the areas of Human Trafficking, Violence against Children, Harmful Practices including female genital mutilation and child marriage, prevention of violence in schools and educational institutions, among others. The intern will contribute to the coordination, analysis, compilation of lessons learned and opportunities in these areas of work.

Coordination and inputs to technical working groups and other inter-agency mechanisms:

  • Work with policy specialists to provide substantive inputs and participate in relevant inter-agency mechanisms;
  • Provide required technical support and coordination to support the work with inter-agency global and joint programmes, as well as multi-partnership initiatives.
  • Support coordination of interlinkages work with other units within UN Women.
  • Provide technical support to other colleagues in the field and in HQ in regards to the above-mentioned areas of work.

Assist in regular analysis and feedback on work being conducted at the country level on different EVAW areas of work for potential growth and expansion of partnerships:

  • Maintain and provide updates and analysis on different interventions being conducted at the country level in the above-mentioned areas and identify opportunities for growth.
  • Ensure systematic documentation of lessons learned and successful practices at the country, regional and global level.
  • Identify cutting edge research related to the prevention and response to violence against women, including collecting, and presenting information gathered from diverse sources.

Work with the Policy Specialist on coordination and inputs to global and regional meetings and other global fora.

  • Provide support and coordination of relevant preparations for CSW/UNGA and other inter-governmental processes.
  • Support advocacy activities at the global level in different thematic areas under the VAW portfolio.

Qualifications

Education:

  • The intern must have studied international development, law, political science, gender studies, social work or other similar subjects at the university level.
  • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.

Technical knowledge and skills:

  • Knowledge of gender and human rights
  • Ability to work on issues in the area of gender equality, violence against women or human rights.
  • Skills on data visualization and communications are an asset.

Language:

  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral) in English are required; Working knowledge of another UN language a distinct advantage.

 Interns are not financially remunerated by UN Women.

Note:

 In July 2010, the United Nations General Assembly created UN Women, the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women. The creation of UN Women came about as part of the UN reform agenda, bringing together resources and mandates for greater impact. It merges and builds on the important work of four previously distinct parts of the UN system (DAW, OSAGI, INSTRAW and UNIFEM), which focused exclusively on gender equality and women's empowerment

UN Women Internship Policy:

1.) Applicants to the United Nations internship programme must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:

(a)    Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);

(b)    Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent);

(c)    Have graduated with a university degree (as in (a) or (b) above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.

2.) UN Women internship programme does not provide a salary or remuneration for the internship;

3.) All the expenses connected with the internship will be borne by the intern, sponsoring Government or institution;

4.) UN Women accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness or death incurred during the internship;

5.) The intern is responsible for obtaining necessary visas and arranging travel to and from the duty station where the internship will be performed;

6.) Interns are not eligible to apply for, or be appointed to, any position in the professional and above categories in UN WOMEN during the period of the internship or for six months immediately following the expiration date of the internship;

7.) The intern must provide proof of enrollment in a health insurance plan, proof of school enrollment, a scanned copy of his/her passport, two letters of recommendation, and application
