Antecedentes

The Support for Effective Cooperation and Coordination of Cross-border Initiatives in Southwest Ethiopia-Northwest Kenya, Marsabit-Borana and Dawa, and Kenya-Somalia-Ethiopia (SECCCI) Project is designed to provide technical support to national governments of Ethiopia, Kenya and Somalia at the national level.

The project is funded by the European Union, with co-financing contributions from UNDP and UNEP: European Union: Euro 7,706,082 equivalent to $ 9,571,724, UNDP TRAC: $ 358,940 and UNEP: $ 119,647 and implemented by the UNDP RSCA in partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD).

The Project was contracted to United Nations Development Programme/Regional Service Centre for Africa (UNDP/RSCA) at the end of February 2018, following a year of formulation and negotiation between the UNDP/RSCA, the European Union Delegation (EUD) in Addis Ababa, Intergovernmental Agency for Development (IGAD) and United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

The overall objective of the project is to address the drivers of conflict and instability, irregular migration and displacement in the cross-border areas of the Horn of Africa through improved cross-border cooperation and coordination.

The SECCCI Project is focusing on three cross border clusters: 

  1. Marsabit - Moyale at the Kenyan, Ethiopian border;
  2. Turkana – Omo at the Kenyan and Ethiopian Border;
  3. Mandera – Gedo – Doolow at the Kenyan, Ethiopian and Somali border.

However, the SECCCI Project has also a coordination role for the Cross-Border collaboration programme in western Ethiopia and Eastern Sudan called Cluster III, the linking between clusters has started in October and will be operationalised once the three first clusters are up and running.

Deberes y responsabilidades

The overall objective of this internship is to learn and experience a UN working environment through a hands-on ( Learning by doing) approach in supporting the SECCCI Project in the production of the visibility items and to assist with ensuring visibility and awareness raising and communication of the SECCCI Project, in full compliance with the Joint Visibility Guidelines for EC-UN Actions in the Field.

As well as, the Intern will provide assistance for editing of the SECCCI Project materials, will assist with digital and social media, and will promote the Project’s result in national and local mass media.

The Intern will not be entitled to any payments. All costs for accommodation, living, travel to or from the duty stations are solely his/her responsibility.

Expected outputs and deliverables:

To achieve the overall and specific objectives, the Intern will undertake the following tasks:

  1. Learn and develop new skills that will allow the National Internship to prepare for potential working opportunities Through out the internship;
  2. Assistance for ensuring visibility and awareness raising and communication of the SECCCI Project;
  3. Editing of SECCCI Project materials with an innovative and creative approach;
  4. Assisting with digital and social media, including Facebook, twitter, and other innovative mechanisms;
  5. Following the UNDP procedures and guidelines from the communication team and promote the Projects’ results in national and local mass-media;
  6. Assistance with the SECCCI visibility materials items production;
  7. Present a final verbal presentation of the internship experience to the team.

Habilidades y experiencia requeridas

Education:

  • Currently in the final year of a Bachelor’s degree communications, journalism or other related social studies; or
  • Currently enrolled in a Master’s degree; or
  • Have graduated no longer than 1 year ago from a master’s degree or equivalent studies.

Experience:

  • Skills in photography;
  • Excellent general understanding of development, international affairs, business principles, poverty, human rights and other related issues;
  • Experience working collaboratively in a team structure in a multicultural environment; and
  • Working in a public environment.

Language:

  • Proficiency in English;
  • Knowledge of Amharic and Somali languages would be an asset.

Intern requiements:

  • Applicants should indicate which months they are available part and/or full time and when they complete their studies;
  • UNDP internship programme does not provide a salary or remuneration for the internship;
  • All the expenses connected with the internship will be borne by the intern, sponsoring Government or institution;
  • UNDP accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness or death incurred during the internship;
  • The intern is responsible for obtaining necessary visas and arranging travel to and from the duty station where the internship will be performed;
  • Interns are not eligible to apply for, or be appointed to, any post in UNDP during the period of the internship;
  • The intern must provide proof of enrollment in health insurance plan;
  • Interns are not staff members and may not represent UNDP in any official capacity;
  • The Intern is expected to work full time but flexibility is allowed for his/her education programme;
  • The intern will have to obtain financing for subsistence and make his/her own arrangements for internship, travel, VISA, accommodation etc.;
