Antecedentes

As the lead development agency in Sudan, UNDP supports strategic capacity development to promote inclusive, transparent and efficient governance systems. Through partnerships with national and sub-national government and civil society, UNDP strives to eliminate poverty, enable recovery, and sustain the environment, and advance peace and social cohesion in Sudan.
Through partnership with the government of Sudan and donor community, UNDP has managed to expand its development services in Sudan, focusing and consolidating its niche around support for strengthening democratic governance, crisis prevention and recovery, rural and urban poverty, and biodiversity conservation and addressing the roots causes of climate change. Further, UNDP is contribution to a UN-wide effort for speeding up national progress on eradication of malaria, tuberculosis, and HIV/AIDS and development of policy recommendations through nationally-led tools such as the National Human Development report.

Context of the Assignment: As an active development agency, UNDP produces knowledge and communications products and publications on a regular basis. UNDP has recently established a quality assurance process for all publications. To assist in meeting the editorial and production standards in line with the new process, UNDP is setting up a Roster of Photographers with experience in documenting the substantive areas of poverty reduction, democratic governance, environment and energy, capacity development, HIV and AIDS and gender equality and women’s empowerment.

In particular, the consultant photographer is expected to work closely with the Communications Unit to produce compelling images that highlight UNDP work and achievements. Photos and shootings are expected to be used for key products; a photo archive, short documentaries (3-10 minutes each), and an in-house gallery. Further, photos and documentaries are expected to be exhibited on UNDP public events, UNDP web posting, social media, and print publications, etc.

 

Deberes y responsabilidades

The overall objective of this assignment is to produce a package of photographs and short documentaries on needs basis to document UNDP work, activities, events, results and success stories of UNDP work in the country. The photographs and images should tell a story which emphasizes UNDP and partners contributions to the country’s efforts to promote growth and development while tackling issues of poverty, human development, and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

Whenever possible, the photographs and images should highlight the achievements and impact of UNDP work by illustrative BEFORE and AFTER images, telling the country’s development story by using compelling images focusing on people and communities.

The contractor will work on a needs basis under the guidance of the Head of Partnerships and Communications (PACOM) of UNDP Sudan Country Office in Khartoum to produce a series of photographs illustrating the topic as described above. All of the material should reveal work that is a direct result of UNDP funding, programs, and projects — which will be provided to the photographer or arranged for him at the field level.

Expected Activities:

This assignment is made up of the following components:

  • Filming, and photo shooting, which may involve extensive field visits

  • Compiling, design/ layout, and producing of an electronic and software version (in a pdf format), ready for printing and final production of the photographic documentary;

  • Establishing of a Photo Archive consists of high-quality photos to be used by UNDP for various purposes;

Compiling, design/ layout, and framing of a collection of photos to be used as an in-house gallery throughout UNDP compound. For this particular part, cost of photos’ framing will be paid separately and upon delivery of service;

  • Photography Filming for production of (3-10 minutes) of short documentaries including project sites, interviews with beneficiaries and other relevant stakeholders.

Photographs must include a brief caption with description of where the picture was taken and explain what is happening in the photo. In some cases, a story or a quote of the beneficiaries will be included.

  • Proven ability in photography and filming ability to assimilate and communicate complex visual messages in an engaging and user-friendly manner;
  • Advanced knowledge and skills of MS Office, including Adobe Photoshop and other editing tools Photoshop is required.
  • Provision of portfolio items of previous work, which demonstrate the applicant’s artistic abilities, attention to detail and familiarity with new technology, will also be an asset.

  •  Fluency in Arabic. Knowledge of English will be an asset.

  • - Previous experience of working with UN agencies, NGOs and INGOs will be an asset;
  • - Availability and willingness to travel to remote areas of Sudan;
  • - Ability to work in close coordination with other team members;
  • - Has excellent interpersonal skills that allow good engagement at the corporate and community level;
  • - Ability to work long hours in a complex operating environment.
