Antecedentes

UNDP is the United Nations' global development network, an organization advocating for change and connecting countries to knowledge, experience and resources to help people build a better life. On the ground in about 170 countries and territories, UNDP works to eradicate poverty while protecting the planet. We help countries develop strong policies, skills, partnerships and institutions so they can sustain their progress.

Amkeni Wakenya is UNDP-Kenya flagship facility for supporting civil society organizations (CSOs) working in the democratic governance sector. The facility was established in 2008 and rendered financial and technical support to over 370 civil society organizations until the expiry of the first phase in 2014. The facility commenced its second phase in 2015 following the signing of a new project document with the Government of Kenya. Amkeni Wakenya is currently implementing a human rights promotion programme with funding from The Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands (EKN) and an access to justice project with funding from the European Union (EU). The two projects cover a combined 16 counties are expected to run until 2019 and 2022 respectively.

Amkeni works to achieve the following objectives:

  • To improve respect, enjoyment and promotion of access to justice, human rights and freedoms for Kenyans
  • To entrench rights-responsive devolved system of governance
  • To improve organizational performance, sustainability and enabling environment for CSOs in Kenya
  • To enhance capacity of civil society to respond to contemporary governance issues

Amkeni Wakenya is seeking an intern who is interested in gaining experience and providing support to media, communication and knowledge management in the Facility’s ongoing work.

Deberes y responsabilidades

Under the overall guidance of the Project Manager, the intern is expected to will undertake the following tasks:

  • Collect relevant project information and stories for updating the Amkeni Wakenya project website
  • Manage the social media channels for the Amkeni Wakenya project
  • Support development and dissemination of project newsletter
  • Document lessons learnt and produce relevant knowledge products for dissemination
  • Manage a communication calendar for the project
  • Provide liaison between Amkeni Wakenya and grantees over media and knowledge management matters
  • Conduct media monitoring activities to track and assess Amkeni Wakenya’s media visibility and presence
  • Participate in capacity building activities
  • Provide support to project management

Outputs

  • Effective support for management of communication platforms including website and social media channels;
  • Effective support in organizing and undertaking media communications’ capacity building and liaison activities
  • Effective support in development and dissemination of knowledge management products
  • Effective support in enhancing media visibility and profile of Amkeni Wakenya project

Education:

Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:

  1. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (Master’s degree or equivalent);
  2. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent);
  3. Have graduated with a university degree (as defined in (a) and (b) above) and, if selected, must start the internship within one-year of graduation.

In addition:

  • The university must be accredited.
  • The applicant must be specializing in Media and/or Communications and/or Knowledge management.

Experience:

Excellent skills in the usage of computer software packages (MS Word, Excel, etc)

Language requirements:

Fluency in English - written and spoken is required

Duration:

  • Internship assignments vary in length according to the availability and academic requirements of the intern, as well as the needs of UNDP. However, duration is from six weeks to six months.

Status:

  • Interns are considered gratis personnel. They are not staff members.
  • Interns may not be sought or accepted as substitutes for staff to be recruited against authorized posts.
  • Interns may not represent UNDP in any official capacity.

Third-party claims:

UNDP is not responsible for any claims by any parties where the loss of or damage to their property, death or personal injury was caused by the actions or omission of action by the interns during their internship.

Interns’ Expenses:

Interns are not financially remunerated by UNDP.

All costs connected with an intern's participation in the Programme must be borne by:

  • The nominating institution, related institution or government, which may provide the required financial assistance to its students;
  • The student, who will have to obtain financing for subsistence and make his/her own arrangements for travel (including to and from the office), visas, accommodation, etc.

Insurance

UNDP accepts no responsibility for the medical insurance of the intern or costs arising from accidents and illness incurred during an internship. As interns are not covered under any insurance, including MAIP, they should not travel to hazardous locations in the course of their internship with UNDP.

Applicants for internship must show proof of valid medical insurance for the duty station for which they will work.It must include adequate coverage in the event of an injury or illness during the internship which:

  • Requires transportation to the Home Country or Country of Residence for further treatment; or
  • Results in death and requires preparation and return of the remains to the Home Country, or Country of Residence
