Antecedentes

UNDP designed a program aimed at reducing exposure of Georgia’s communities, livelihoods and infrastructure to climate-induced natural hazards reduced through a well-functioning nation-wide multi-hazard early warning system and risk-informed local action. The program encompasses two interrelated projects: 1. “Scaling-up Multi-Hazard Early Warning System and the Use of Climate Information in Georgia” (hereafter GCF project) funded by the Green Climate Fund and 2. “Strengthening Climate Change Adaptation Capacities in Georgia” (hereafter SDC project) funded by Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation.

The GCF project will provide critical climate risk information that would enable the Government of Georgia to implement a number of nation-wide transformative policies and actions for reducing exposure and vulnerability of the population to climate-induced hazards. The project will thus catalyse a paradigm shift in the national climate risk management, climate-proofed disaster risk reduction and early warning approaches. The project innovation and transformative change will also include (a) participatory “Last Mile” communication solutions tailored to the needs of local communities, including CBEWSs; (b) increasing implementation capacities for carrying out cost-effective risk reduction and community resilience measures through such innovative approaches as watershed/floodplain restoration, agroforestry, etc., and combination of structural and non-structural protection measures aimed at reducing exposure and increasing effectiveness of the early warning; (c) combining best available science and local knowledge for vulnerability assessment, hazard and risk mapping, disaster modelling and forecasting; (d) (e) carrying out a comprehensive community, municipal and national-wide awareness raising, education and capacity development activities on multi-hazard risk reduction, including preparedness, response and EWSs.

The project funded by SDC will aim at reducing exposure and vulnerability of communities in Georgia, through development of multi-hazard risk information and relevant capacities; Geographical coverage of the project interventions is nation-wide, particularly 11 major river basins in Georgia: Enguri, Rioni, Chorokhi-Adjaristskali, Supsa, Natanebi, Khobi, Kintrishi, Khrami-Ktsia, Alazani, Iori, Mtkvari (same as Kura) focusing on the following hazards: floods, landslides, mudflows, avalanches, hailstorms, windstorms and droughts.

On behalf of GCF and SDC projects, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Georgia is announcing an internship. Preferred starting date for the internship assignment is November 15, 2019. Successful candidates will be offered internships throughout the calendar year. Only those candidates selected for interviews/further assessment by hiring managers will be contacted.

Deberes y responsabilidades

The intern will assist the GCF and SDC teams in continued implementation of ongoing initiatives and interventions.

Specifically, the intern will:

Support project teams to prepare materials and content for major activities, launches, and media outreach;
Draft, edit, and format news, press release, blogs, brochures, project 1-pagers;
Assist with coordination and provide logistical support in organizing trainings, events, conferences and any other project related activities/initiatives;
Provide background research on relevant issues falling under project(s) (GCF/SDC) thematic areas, on demand;
Support the team’s knowledge management efforts, including the external website and the intranet;
Provide support in monitoring and evaluation process and reporting;
Provide oral and written translations from English into Georgian and vice versa;
Assist in the coordination with UNDP Country Communication office;
Provide other support and assistance as required, including preparation and proofreading of documents, and helping with correspondence and research;
Other duties as required by the project team.

Habilidades y experiencia requeridas

Applicants to the UNDP internship programme must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:

Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent);
Have graduated with a university degree (as defined in (1) and (2) above) and, if selected, must start the internship within one-year of graduation.

Preferred areas of studies: journalism, communications, media studies, political and social sciences, economics, international relations, law, marketing, public and business administration, natural sciences or other relevant disciplines
A sound command of written and spoken proficiency in English.

Conditions:

Interns are not financially remunerated by UNDP.
Interns are responsible for securing adequate medical insurance for the duration of their internship with UNDP and must provide a medical certificate of good health prior to starting the internship. UNDP will not reimburse the medical insurance of the intern. Any costs arising from accidents and illness incurred during an internship assignment will be the responsibility of the intern
Applicants for internships must show proof of valid medical insurance for the duty station in which they will intern.
UNDP accepts no responsibility for loss or damage to personal effects that may occur during the internship.

Subsequent Employment:

There is no expectation of employment with UNDP following an internship.
