2020 is a vital year for UN Women and the women’s rights movement. It marks the 25th?anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, the 20th?Anniversary of?the UN Security Council resolution 1325 on women, peace and security, the 5th anniversary of the global?Sustainable Development Goals, the 40th year anniversary of CEDAW, the 10th?anniversary of?UN Women’s establishment?as the global champion for the empowerment of women and girls and the 75th Year anniversary of the UN.

In order to galvanize attention and actions on key issues from equal pay to equal sharing of unpaid care and domestic work to equal participation in economic and political life and decision-making in all areas of life, UN Women is running a yearlong multi-generational campaign Generation Equality (September 2019-October 2020).

Due to the increasing demand for visual storytelling and creative campaigning to engage audiences across multiple distribution platforms and increase UN Women’s brand visibility and supporter base, the Communications section seeks an experienced Visual Journalist and Creative Copywriter (retainer contract) to support the Digital and Interactive Media Team Lead to pitch, write, edit, and execute innovative visual storytelling and campaigns across UN Women’s global platforms from graphics (infographics, illustrations, creative media, motion graphics) to online visual stories and interactives to emerging storytelling forms like AR and interactive experiential exhibits. The retainer consultant will specifically support UN Women’s Generation Equality campaign and key UN International Days.

Deberes y responsabilidades

Under the supervision of the Digital & Interactive Media Team Lead, the Visual Journalist and Creative Copywriter (retainer contract) will be responsible to support the creative copywriting, visual storyboarding, concepting and writing for short- and long-form visual content around women’s rights in the context of UN Women’s Generation Equality Campaign, International Women’s Day and the Commission on the Status of Women. Tasks include:

  • Analyze research and breakdown complex women’s rights topics and research reports into compelling content for visual design. This includes pitching concepts, content structures and basic wireframing to get a sense of the visual message or journey, particularly for longer-form pieces
  • Write engaging copy, ranging from conversational and witty to educational and serious in tone, for short- and long-form graphics and interactives and other visual forms of storytelling for digital platforms
  • Write and produce clear, concise, error-free prose for visually driven short- and long-form evergreen content, such as infographics, charts, interactive graphics, mobile-first interactive stories, complex and simple visual graphics and other visual forms within tight deadlines and with a strong attention to detail.
  • Pitch, conceptualize, wireframe and storyboard visual storytelling features and campaign content - from online graphics, motion graphics and interactives to emerging storytelling forms like AR and experiential exhibits, in close collaboration with in-house or external talent, such as graphic designers, artists, web designers, video producers, photographers and print specialists
  • Review, proofread, edit and suggest copy for existing visual projects under Generation Equality
  • Occasionally support the Digital & Interactive Media Team Lead on production tasks for campaigns produced by external creative agencies for digital and OOH media placement. This can include providing feedback on creative concepts, wire-frames, requirements documents, copywriting, editing and proofreading.

Habilidades y experiencia requeridas

  • Education (B.A. or M.A.) in Journalism, Visual Communications, Marketing Communications or similar field
  • 3-5+ years professional experience in visual storytelling, creative copywriting and/or campaign production for a non-profit, news media or creative agency
  • Fluent in English; Spanish and/or French are a plus.
  • Creative and visual storyteller and/or campaigner with excellent research, reporting, writing, editing and proofreading skills, including the ability to synthesize input from multiple stakeholders and complex, with accuracy and attention to detail, gender sensitivity and cultural sensitivity
  • Flexible and fluid writer, with a capacity to dive into new subjects and get up-to-speed quickly
  • Strong news judgment, a solid understanding of current events, ideally with a strong understanding or genuine interest in women’s rights
  • Ability and proven experience crafting clear, concise and exceptional copy for multiple digital channels and media types, including digital, web interactive, infographic and visual design, social media, video, photo, AR and/or experiential design
  • Proven track record of visual storytelling, creative conceptualization and storyboarding for simple as well as complex productions.
  • Knowledge of web and digital production workflows
  • A creative vision and willingness to share and collaborate on new ideas, including with emerging technologies and new visual storytelling forms
  • Experience using design or wireframing software for creative conceptualization, such as Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop or InVision highly preferred
  • Familiar with the United Nations
  • Self-starter; organized; able to multitask and balance multiple responsibilities
