Antecedentes

The UNDP-GEF Unit is based in the Bureau for Policy and Programme Support (BPPS) and is responsible for providing leadership, technical support and implementation oversight to the delivery of the Environment and Sustainable Development pillar of UNDP’s Strategic Plan. Its main focus is on helping countries develop the capacity to fully incorporate environmental sustainability and resilience into development at national and local, but also global and regional, levels. The principal areas of work are in environmental mainstreaming, environmental finance, adaptation to climate change, and local governance of resources, including energy.

The Unit is organized into a number of substantive technical teams with staff located in both HQs and UNDP's Regional Hubs (RH) in Addis Ababa, Istanbul, Panama, and Bangkok, and with a decentralized structure in terms of financial, operational, and budget managements with authority delegated to respective managers located in HQ or in the region.

UNDP-GEF is seeking an intern to work under the overall supervision of the UNDP-GEF Regional Technical Advisor on Climate Change Mitigation for Europe and CIS and Regional Technical Advisor on Climate Change Mitigation for Arab States and Africa. The intern will be based in the UNDP Istanbul Regional Hub and will support Climate Change Mitigation (CCM) projects funded by Global Environment Facility (GEF) and Green Climate Fund (GCF).

UNDP Istanbul Regional Hub will provide the office space and an internet connection but the consultant will be responsible for providing their own IT equipment such as laptop computer and mobile phone.

 

Deberes y responsabilidades

The Intern will carry out the following tasks:

  • Contribute to designing and implementation of projects;
  • Assist with research and analysis on issues related to climate change mitigation in the Europe & CIS, Arab States, and Africa regions, including climate change snapshots, where requested
  • Support CCM team in communication and knowledge management activities;
    • Write stories/blog posts about the work of CCM portfolio
    • Research, collect, analyze and present the work CCM team has been doing in Europe and CIS, Arab States and Africa regions
    • Contribute to lessons learned studies of specific projects;
  • Provide administrative support on an as-needed basis;
  • Carry out other pertinent tasks as requested by the supervisors.

Habilidades y experiencia requeridas

Education:

Applicants to the UNDP internship programme must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:

  • Enrollment in a graduate-level degree programme in political science, international relations, environment and/or social sciences;
  • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent) in political science, international relations, environment, and/or social sciences;
  • Have graduated with a university degree (as defined in (a) and (b) above) and, if selected, must start the internship within one-year of graduation.

Experience:

  • Demonstrated interest and/or achievements related knowledge management, political science, environment, climate change and/or development studies.
  • A desire to work with and gain the confidence and respect of people of different language, national and cultural backgrounds.

Language:

  • Proficient in both written and spoken English and French.

 

Learning:

  • The intern will develop a good overview of global climate change mitigation projects and a basic understanding of UNDP project management concepts.

Financial Issues:

Internships within the UN system are subject to conditions the applicant must get familiar with before signing his/her internship agreement.

Starting from January 2020 interns will receive stipends according to UN rules and regulations.

Any further costs associated with the internship must be borne by the nominating institution, related institution or government, which may provide the required financial assistance to its students; or by the student, who will have to obtain financing for subsistence and make his or her arrangements for travel, accommodation and other costs.

Candidates who are selected must submit the following documents:

  • Official letter from the University confirming enrolment in a graduate-level degree programme;
  • Proof of medical and life/accident insurance valid for the location in which the internship will be carried out. Selected intern must have medical and life insurance.
  • UNDP only accepts interns for a minimum of 6 weeks and a maximum of 6 months.
  • UNDP accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness or death incurred during the internship.
  • Interns are not staff members and may not represent UNDP in any official capacity.
  • It is important to note that interns are responsible to arrange for their own visa and residence documents and need to plan for these well in advance.

Subsequent Employment:

  • The purpose of the Internship Programme is not to lead to further employment with UNDP but to complement an intern’s studies.
  • Therefore, there should be no expectation of employment at the end of an internship.
