UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls, the empowerment of women, and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security. Placing women's rights at the center of all its efforts, UN Women leads and coordinates United Nations system efforts to ensure that commitments on gender equality and gender mainstreaming translate into action throughout the world.

The year 2020 marks the 25th anniversary of the Fourth UN World Conference on Women and adoption of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action (1995), the international blueprint for gender equality and women’s empowerment. It also marks the 10th anniversary of the establishment of UN Women (2010), as well as the 20th anniversary of Resolution 1325 on women, peace and security (2000). In this context, UN Women has launched the organizational Generation Equality public advocacy campaign, and it is convening the Generation Equality Forum, which will kick off in Mexico in May 2020 and culminate in Paris on 7-10 July 2020.

UN Women’s Internal Communications, which sits within the Executive Office with a close link to the Communication section, supports the communication of corporate priorities and activities to build cohesion and unlock greater engagement from UN Women personnel across the world. The creation of UN Women came about as part of the UN reform agenda, bringing together resources and mandates for greater impact. It merges and builds on the important work of four previously distinct parts of the UN system (DAW, OSAGI, INSTRAW and UNIFEM), which focused exclusively on gender equality and women's empowerment.
