UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

In 2015, on 25 September, the United Nations General Assembly adopted unanimously the Resolution 70/1 Transforming our World: the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Gender equality and women’s empowerment is at the heart of the agenda, as numerous goals and targets address structural barriers to achieve equal rights and opportunities between women and men, girls and boys.

As a global champion for women and girls, UN Women was established to accelerate progress on meeting their needs worldwide. UN Women works consistently to disrupt stereotypes and engage diverse constituencies on gender equality. While UN Women, as a United Nations body, does not have any commercial affiliation or endorse any product or service, it is proud to convene the Unstereotype Alliance and is pleased to partner with the leading players. UN Women welcomes the participation of industry members and encourage others to join us in support of the Alliance.

The Unstereotype Alliance is a thought and action platform convened by UN Women, that uses advertising as a force for good to drive positive change. It seeks to eradicate harmful gender-based stereotypes. The alliance is focused on empowering women in all their diversity (race, class, age, ability, ethnicity, religion, sexuality, language, education, etc.) and addressing harmful masculinities to help create a gender equal world. The Alliance brings together a powerful global coalition of industry leaders behind the common goal of eliminating gender bias and harmful gender stereotypes from their advertising.

The Unstereotype Alliance provides an opportunity of leveraging the platform in enabling the private sector companies to address harmful gender-based stereotypes in all media and advertising and systematically depict women and men as empowered actors with progressive, intelligent and multi-dimensional personalities, which is in alignment of one of the Women’s Empowerment Principles (WEPs)

WEPs are a set of seven principles for businesses offering guidance on how to strengthen gender equality in the workplace, in the marketplace and in the community. The WEPs are jointly developed by UN Women and UN Global Compact and are promoted under WeEmpowerAsia Programme.

The WeEmpower Asia (WEA) programme is a collaborative effort between the Regional Office of UN Women for Asia and the Pacific (ROAP) and the European Union (EU), which is funding the action under its Partnership Instrument.

ACTION-ORIENTED

BEYOND GENDER ADRESSING INTERSECTIONALITIES

Unstereotype Alliance focuses on intersectionality of race with gender, disability and other forms of discrimination. We expect national chapters to tailor their efforts to relevant issues within their context.
