II. CORPORATE BACKGROUND:

UNDP works in about 170 countries and territories, helping to achieve the eradication of poverty, and the reduction of inequalities and exclusion. We help countries to develop policies, leadership skills, partnering abilities, institutional capabilities and build resilience in order to sustain development results.

UNDP is working to strengthen new frameworks for development, disaster risk reduction and climate change. We support countries' efforts to achieve the new Sustainable Development Goals, which will guide global development priorities through 2030. The key 2030 Agenda principle of leaving no one behind and stamping out inequality is at the core of everything we do.

UNDP focuses on helping countries build and share solutions in three main areas:

  • Sustainable development

  • Democratic governance and peacebuilding

  • Climate and disaster resilience

In all our activities, we encourage the protection of human rights and the empowerment of women, minorities and the poorest and most vulnerable.

2020 marked the beginning of a Decade of Action towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). But with the COVID-19 pandemic, the global context for development has fundamentally changed. The world faces the greatest socio-economic shock in a generation, coming at a time of acute inequality, ecological fragility and growing distrust within and amongst societies. This pandemic is a health crisis. But not just a health crisis. Tackling COVID-19 is also a humanitarian and development crisis that is threatening to leave deep social, economic and political scars for years to come, particularly in countries already weighed down by fragility, poverty and conflict.

The solidarity that brought the global community together to create the Global Goals is needed more than ever. From building strong institutions to creating jobs to ensuring education and healthcare for all, the SDGs and the pledge to leave no one behind work best when tackled in an integrated manner. That is how the world must work, together, to defeat COVID-19.

UNDP is calling for recovery efforts that recognize the interdependencies between human and environmental health, and aim to build resilience to even more profound risks on the horizon - biodiversity loss, widening inequality and climate change.

III. INTERNSHIP OFFICE BACKGROUND

In the framework of Agenda 2030, environmental sustainability implies on the one hand the reduction of damage to the environment, and on the other hand the role of natural resources and ecosystem services in human well-being, economic opportunities and social and ecological resilience. As such, UNDP sees the SDGs as an opportunity to promote a broader approach to sustainable development around the world.

Of the 169 SDG targets, 86 include the environmental dimension.? These specifically address environmental sustainability as it relates to: poverty, hunger, health, education, gender, water and sanitation, energy, economic growth, human settlements, sustainable consumption and production, climate change, oceans and terrestrial ecosystems, highlighting environmental elements and their interconnections with poverty eradication, social protection and other important societal issues.

Our objective is to contribute to the economic and social development of the country that is environmentally sustainable and improves the living conditions of the most vulnerable and excluded population, promoting the achievement of the Sustainable Development Agenda 2030.
