With financial support of the Government of Sweden, the United Nations (UN) in Bosnia and Herzegovina, administered through United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) started “The SDGs Roll-out Support and Private Sector Engagement Project in Bosnia and Herzegovina”, with the aim to instigate landing of the Agenda 2030 in the country, as well as capacitate and prepare private and public sector partners for the SDGs’ implementation, thus directly support the country’s efforts to contribute to the largest global agenda that exists today – Agenda 2030. The Project envisages two outputs as follows:

  • SDGs Roadmap for BIH developed, and implementation started;
  • Private sector actors sensitized and engaged in SDGs prioritization, planning and implementation.

The role of the private sector is pivotal in the SDG roll-out process. One of the paths to promote sustainable development is by promoting sustainability reporting among companies that lead the path and pioneer the SDGs (sustainable development goals) practices in the country.
Sustainability reporting help companies to make better decisions that create social, environmental and economic benefits for all stakeholders while disclosing of the non-financial information benefit business in many ways. The reporting process allows gaining a comprehensive understanding of the risks and opportunities businesses are facing as well as helping organizations to report about their impacts on the economy, the environment, and society. Sharing information about policies and performance on environmental, social and governance issues helps build trust with customers and partners, monitor and mitigate risk, and find ways to improve efficiency, resulting in a positive impact on companies’ financial results. By reporting, companies also fulfil the compliance requirements of regulations from governments, financial markets and international organizations. There are several frameworks (for this purpose the Project uses the GRI Reporting Standards) that are referenced in over a hundred policy instruments and dozens of stock exchanges or market regulator across the world.
Year 2020 is the second year that the Project organizes the SDG Business Pioneers Award in BiH, a first annual competition of this kind in BiH aiming to promote private sector’s efforts and contributions in the field of sustainable development. Micro, small, medium and large companies applied by forwarding their data that got evaluated focusing on two key themes (creation of decent jobs, as well as innovation and reduction of ecological footprint) during the SDG Business Pioneers Award in 2019.
The methodology and evaluation tool used for the SDG Business Pioneers Award in BIH for 2020 were developed by the project team using the UN Global Compact and GRI Standards as references.
