UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

To support Member States in implementing the 2030 Agenda, UN Women’s global gender data programme, “Making Every Woman and Girl Count” (Women Count), is affecting a radical shift in the availability, accessibility and use of data and statistics on key aspects of gender equality and women’s empowerment. The Programme is implementing a multi-year and multi-country programme of work, supported by global and regional activities linking normative and technical work on gender statistics at the global level to the regional and national levels through three interlinked areas of work:

  • Creating an enabling environment: Promoting a supportive policy environment to address institutional and financial constraints and to strengthen policies and practices governing the production and use of gender statistics;
  • Increasing data production: Supporting efforts to improve the regular production of gender statistics, including building the technical capacity of the national statistical systems (NSSs) and providing financial support for data collection to monitor the SDGs and other national and international commitments; and
  • Improving data accessibility and use: Promoting greater access to and analysis of data by users, including open access, dissemination tools, user-producer dialogues and strengthened the capacity of all relevant actors to use gender statistics in policy, programmes and advocacy.

Located in the Research and Data Section of UN Women (R&D), the Statistics Research Assistant works under the supervision of the Statistics Specialist of the Women Count programme to provide technical support to the latter in the implementation of statistical activities and delivery of statistical outputs related to the Global Toolkit on the Generation of More Disaggregated Gender Data Using Existing Household Surveys (Gender Data Work project), specifically and assist  in delivery of activities and outputs of other Women Count global projects, generally.

The Toolkit on Gender Data Work will be a collection of good practices as well as learnings of a number of country studies, each focusing on a particular aspect of the statistical process of producing more disaggregated gender statistics from existing household surveys.  That is, strengthening the commitment of the leadership of national statistical systems (NSSs) on producing more and better gender statistics, identifying national priority gender equality indicators, developing methodologies and producing select priority indicators, and disseminating, advocacy and use of gender statistics produced.  The Toolkit on Gender Data Work will thus provide key actors in NSSs not only guidance on planning, organizing and implementing each key stage of the process but also on institutional arrangements and mechanisms, communications, collaboration and coordination.

Ultimately, the Toolkit on Gender Data Work is meant to expand the support of the Women Count programme to countries beyond the seven pilot countries by providing a compilation of tools strengthening statistical capacities of key actors in NSSs to produce more and better gender statistics. The Toolkit on Gender Data Work will be launched on the Women Count Data Hub to ensure wide access of target users.  A summary report on the Toolkit on Gender Data Work will be submitted to the Inter-Secretariat Working Group on Household Surveys (ISWGHS) to serve as a background document for the 52nd Session of the UN Statistical Commission in 2021.
