Antecedentes

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

UN Women in Georgia supports state and non-state partners towards the achievement of substantive gender equality in Georgia. In line with national and international commitments, UN Women works on the levels of policies and legislation, institutions and grassroots, in order to achieve transformative results for increased gender equality and greater protection of the rights of women and girls.

In September 2019 UN Women Georgia with the generous support of the Government of Norway launched a three-year project “Good Governance for Gender Equality in Georgia (GG4GEG). The overarching goal/impact of the project is to ensure that governance systems are gender-sensitive and enable gender equality in Georgia. The project is organized around three key outcomes: outcome 1: Gender equality and gender mainstreaming are institutionalized at the national and local levels; outcome 2: Gender mainstreaming capacities are developed and sustained at the national and local levels; outcome 3: More and better-quality data and analysis are available to promote and track the progress of gender equality and women’s empowerment.

Data and statistics are indispensable tools for devising evidence-based policies to achieve gender equality and women’s empowerment, assessing their impact, and promoting accountability. Regardless of important advances related to gender statistics internationally such as adoption of the minimum set of gender indicators in 2013 by the UN Statistical Commission and availability of gender-specific indicators to monitor implementation of the 2030 agenda, important gaps in the area persist making it difficult to monitor progress for women and girls (UN Women, 2018. Making Women and Girls Visible – Gender Data Gaps and Why they Matter; Available at: https://www.unwomen.org/-/media/headquarters/attachments/sections/library/publications/2018/issue-brief-making-women-and-girls-visible-en.pdf?la=en&vs=2720).  To ensure that more and better-quality data and analysis are available to promote and track the progress of gender equality and women’s empowerment, UN Women, within the framework of GG4GEG, supports national partners in addressing gender data gaps in Georgia. Gender Data Specialist will contribute to the implementation of the GG4GEG project by steering technical assistance to national partners on mainstreaming gender across the national statistical system and strengthening capacities of data producers and data users on gender data collection, analysis and dissemination.
